Software and Data Engineer I - II

Oxylus Energy•Branford, CT
•$80,000 - $100,000•Onsite

About The Position

Oxylus Energy is hiring a Software and Data Engineer at the Engineer I or II level to own the software connecting its laboratory operations to experimental data. The role develops and maintains interfaces to electrochemical test stations and analytical equipment, integrates instrument data into a reliable pipeline, manages experimental-data databases, and builds tools for scientists and engineers to retrieve, visualize, and analyze results. This is a hands-on role at the boundary of software and hardware. The engineer will work in the lab with instruments and test stations and collaborate with electrochemists, materials scientists, engineers, and controls engineers. The Engineer II may own the overall data architecture, set coding and data standards, lead larger software projects through deployment, and fully develop the company’s data collection and analysis platform.

  • Experience building data visualization or analysis tools.
  • Interest in working with lab hardware and comfort working in a lab environment.
  • Familiarity with Git and good software engineering practices.
  • High attention to detail, strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Good written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to explain technical topics to non-software colleagues.

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS and with NoSQL databases.
  • Background or coursework in chemistry, electrochemistry, or another experimental science.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain software interfaces to electrochemical test stations and analytical equipment, including potentiostats, gas chromatographs, mass flow controllers, and other lab instruments.
  • Integrate data from test stations and instruments into a unified, automated data pipeline.
  • Design, manage, and maintain cloud databases, including data models, access patterns, backups, and data quality checks.
  • Build and improve tools for retrieving, plotting, and analyzing experimental data, including dashboards, Python libraries, and web applications.
  • Implement consistent metadata and experiment tracking so datasets can be traced to their test station, experiment, and conditions.
  • Work with scientists and engineers to understand workflows and develop practical software tools.
  • Work with controls engineers on interfaces between station automation and data systems.
  • Write clean, tested, and documented code, and maintain version control and deployment practices.
  • Troubleshoot data and connectivity issues on lab equipment and support users of data tools.
  • At Engineer II level, own the overall data architecture, set coding and data standards, and lead larger software projects from design to deployment.
