About The Position

Under general supervision, performs the more difficult professional casework services, provides specialized services, and offers consultation services to subordinates, graduate students, and other staff. In collaboration with San Diego State University, San Diego Unified School District, and Price Philanthropies, and under the direction of the assigned principal investigator for the Lead and Learn from the Heart program, this school social work position strives to meet the educational and mental health needs of 9th through 12th grade students and their families. The purpose of this position is to provide social-emotional and mental health support to 9-12th grade students at Hoover High School in the City Heights community.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree, preferably in social work, public health, counseling, or education.
  • 3 or more years of professional social work experience.
  • Registered with California's Board of Behavioral Sciences as an ACSW or ACSW in progress.
  • Knowledge of the City Heights community and social services resources.
  • Knowledge of the San Diego area public school system.
  • Knowledge and ability to support children at different developmental levels and abilities.
  • Candidate must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.
  • Satisfactory clearance based on background check results (including a criminal record check).

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Haitian/Creole.
  • Hold Valid PPS Credential in School Social Work with the added authorization in Child Welfare and Attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Assess students for mental health issues and complete intake process with students/families.
  • Provide individual, group, and family counseling/therapy.
  • Provide referrals to resources and case management to students.
  • Provide crisis intervention.
  • Develop relationships between home and school, and with health and social service agencies.
  • Facilitate support groups on topics such as self-esteem, social skills, and anger management.
  • Provide prevention and awareness activities to the entire school.
  • Provide SEL presentations and activities to the entire school.
  • Provide classroom presentations on prevention-related topics.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive climate for all multi-ethnic and linguistic parents.
  • Serve as a field instructor with SDSU’s School of Social Work.
  • Collaborate with the SEL program to coordinate support services for students.
  • Collaborate with existing school programs and other agencies to coordinate support services.
  • Collaborate with other school staff to coordinate support services.
  • Attend monthly social work meetings.
  • Monitor quality and timeliness of program documentation, provide input to program management on programmatic issues.
  • Assist in implementing a yearly needs assessment.
  • Responsible for data collection, evaluation, and measurement of outcomes of social work programs.
  • Provide a social work perspective and advocate for students in meetings such as the multidisciplinary team and counseling meetings.
  • Assist parents and families to access community resources.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
