About The Position

The Orange County Department of Social Services has an opening for a Social Worker II in Child Welfare. An employee in this class supports the child welfare services team and will develop a working knowledge of all child welfare programs. Work includes direct practice with children and families, as well as data entry and tracking. The successful candidate for this position displays excellent direct practice social work skills, communication skills, time management skills and organizational skills. Work will include home visits, supervised family time, collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, and assessment of safety and well-being. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Unit Supervisor or program manager with some leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures, in the performance of duties, both in terms of planning and accomplishing work and in making decisions regarding client needs and requests. Supervision may be a responsibility of this class depending on the assignment. Does related work as required. Hiring range is based on the Orange County Social Services Step Plan. The Step Plan is based on years of DSS Social Worker II experience. Full credit is given for years of experience performing the same job functions. Partial credit is given for years of experience performing related job functions. The top half of the scale is reserved for career employees with senior level experience in the same role. This is a safety sensitive position and participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program is required. SBI background check with fingerprinting is required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Social Work in an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work
  • OR Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in a human services field and one (1) year of human services experience in the areas of case management, assessment and referral, supportive counseling, intervention, psycho-social therapy and treatment planning
  • OR Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of human services experience in the areas of case management, assessment and referral, supportive counseling, intervention, psycho-social therapy and treatment planning
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated may be required depending on the departmental need.
  • Successful clearance of an SBI background check with fingerprinting
  • Pre-employment drug test
  • Ability to provide after-hour coverage as needed
  • Fingerprinting and a criminal history background check
  • Satisfactory verification of eligibility for employment
  • Successful completion of the required pre-employment testing and/or screening, including drug testing when required
  • Submission and approval of all new hire documentation completion of new hire paperwork.
