About The Position

As a Social Studies Teacher with Kapolei Charter School by Goodwill Hawaii, you will develop lesson plans that ensure the attainment of state learning standards and the additional specific grade-by-grade learning standards set forth in the charter. The Social Studies Teacher plans, organizes and implements an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Creates and delivers instruction for English curriculum as well as electives. Develops and expands curriculum. Monitors student progress. Communicates with students and parents.

Requirements

  • License issued by the Hawaii Department of Education with grades 7-12 Social Studies endorsement; license issued by another state with the ability to obtain a teacher license in the State of Hawaii; or imminent graduation from state-approved teacher education program.
  • Prior relevant teaching experience in high school Social Studies or Humanities based elective courses.
  • A do-whatever-it-takes attitude including a willingness to work occasionally on the weekend or in the evening
  • An exceptional ability to respond well to feedback and implement it immediately
  • Student/classroom management techniques; common academic, social, behavioral and developmental problems of students.
  • Ability to implement effective classroom management and student care methods and techniques; speak and work effectively with students, teachers, parents and community members.
  • Ability to assess students' progress and modify learning activities and methods as necessary.

  • Clearly and consistently communicating and upholding school rules, values, and expectations in and out of the classroom
  • Setting an urgent, respectful, and positive tone in the classroom
  • Building relationships with students that communicate the importance of college success and your belief that they will succeed
  • Taking on responsibilities outside of their content area instruction such as advisory, lunch duty, enrichment classes, and after school activities
  • Demonstrating solid knowledge and understanding of the content matter
  • Using a multitude of instructional strategies that are academically rigorous and highly engaging
  • Executing detailed lesson plans mapped to specific Common Core standards
  • Taking responsibility for student progress; constantly working to respond to students’ need
  • Long and short-term planning addressing individual needs of students.
  • Prepare students adequately for all required assessments.
  • Prepare at least quarterly individual student achievement reports for parents.
  • Provide an inviting, exciting, innovative, learning environment.
  • Accept and incorporate feedback and coaching from administrative staff.
  • Serve as an advisor to students, including organizing advisory groups, overseeing the academic and behavioral progress.
  • Perform other duties, as deemed appropriate, by the School Director.
