About The Position

Reporting to the manager of clinical services, the Community-Based Researcher (CBR) will be embedded in the Breaking the Cycle (BTC) community centre. The Community-Based Researcher will take primary responsibility for the role out and execution of a research study protocol funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The CBR will monitor the status of participant completion, which includes participant contact and tracking, built-in reminders, and incentive distribution. They will also be responsible for conducting the in vivo observation and coding of the mother-child relationship. This position works out of Toronto, Ontario. Co-led by Mothercraft, the University of Ottawa, and York University, the study is titled "Optimizing Mental Health for Infants Exposed to Early Adversity: A Comparative Effectiveness Study of the Breaking the Cycle and Maxxine Wright Programs". This position will report to the Clinical Psychologist at the Breaking the Cycle and the Principal Investigator at the University of Ottawa. The project has received funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The overarching goal of the study is to explore the effectiveness of early intervention services for child development outcomes.

Requirements

Masters level or equivalent education/experience in a psychology, public health, child development or other social sciences/related fields.
Very strong background in research and evaluation, data collection and analysis.
Strong skills in project management and execution.
Knowledge of practice and implementation of trauma-informed approaches.
Intermediate computer skills and experience using MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, to work under pressure, to effectively manage overlapping duties and to meet deadlines.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work in a team environment. Advanced written and verbal skills.
Ability to attend to detail and display resourcefulness.
Empathetic nature with a good understanding of the challenges faced by individuals who are substance-involved.
Planning: Organize in time a series of actions or events in order to realize an objective or a project. Plan and organize own work and priorities in regular daily activities.

Responsibilities

Participant recruitment and enrolment
Explaining the study to potential BTC clients and responding to questions as needed.
Working with BTC clinicians to recruit participants into the study, many of whom are experiencing challenging life situations and/or involved in substance use.
Enroling participants into the study including informed consent processes (i.e., obtaining consent for participation, follow-ups, and access to one’s clinical file) and communication of safety and compliance issues.
Data collection and management
Following established policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and ethical standards.
Assisting in 4-5 year data collection at pre-intervention, 12 months, 24 months, and 36-months after mothers’ engagement in services at BTC (eg. questionnaire administration).
Assisting with behavioural observation and administration of psychometric tests
Assessing the sensitivity of maternal behaviour using a validated tool (training to be provided).
Tracking participant retention and study attrition and collecting data for participants who end services at BTC.
Developing summary reports and sharing results with participants.
Providing regular updates on participant and study progress to the external research team members.
Assisting with routine data verification and quality control, ensuring data integrity and consistency with the prescribed study protocol and research guides.
Assisting in the development of presentations, papers and other communications.
Conducting literature reviews.
Disseminating research findings through effective knowledge mobilization methods.
Collaborating with clinicians at BTC and external research team members.
Assisting with developmental assessments of young children
Communication and networking
Effectively and accurately communicating relevant research information to the internal and external research team members.
Preparing, organizing and leading monthly research meetings.
Providing support with off-site data collection and any required technical support to intervention sites.
Assists with knowledge translation by contributing to writing manuscripts, protocols, and other knowledge dissemination products.
Assisting with any other duties required by the research project.
