About The Position

Wasauksing First Nation is seeking compassionate, caring, and self-driven individuals for On-Call Social Navigator & Intake Worker positions, covering weekend shifts (days, evenings, nights) and weekday shifts. Reporting to the Housing Manager, the Social Navigator offers non-judgmental support, manages a 24-hour intake line, provides advocacy, and shares resource information with Indigenous individuals and shelter guests, both on and off reserve. This role serves as the initial point of contact for men, women, and children entering the emergency domestic violence/intimate partner violence shelter. Responsibilities include facilitating a calm intake process, offering immediate crisis counseling, and making referrals to other social services as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in front-line social service delivery.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong computer literacy in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Sharepoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Valid Driver's License and reliable personal vehicle.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must provide a vulnerable sector or criminal record check to protect children, youth, and vulnerable persons.

Nice To Haves

  • A degree in social work/counselling psychology or a social service worker diploma, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current full registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
  • Valid Ontario driver's license.
  • Knowledge of current and relevant legislation.
  • First Aid & CPR certification.
  • WHIMIS certification.
  • Food Safety Level 1 certification.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
  • Suicide Prevention and Intervention training.
  • Trauma Informed Care training.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a warm, welcoming, respectful, and non-judgmental environment, ensuring the support and security of staff, volunteers, and guests.
  • Interview clients (individually, in families, or with referral sources) to assess situations and needs, determining eligibility and service requirements.
  • Provide informal counseling during crises and assist clients in developing safety plans.
  • Maintain confidentiality and safeguard clients' personal information.
  • Provide referrals to appropriate resources.
  • Complete and maintain related records, including intake registration, service requests, and referrals for non-admitted individuals.
  • Conduct bag, purse, and pocket checks, provide facility tours, and review general housekeeping policies and procedures upon admittance.
  • Ensure the smooth operation of the emergency shelter.
  • Share community information relevant to the shelter's daily work with staff and the community.
  • Seek opportunities for supplies, partnerships, and donations to support guests.
  • Ensure safe and sustainable programming at the Shelter with a guest-centered approach.
  • Organize and coordinate donation deliveries.
  • Provide relevant and appropriate advocacy and support.
  • Engage in program development with the shelter team.
  • Perform various duties specific to the operation of a safe home.
  • Assist in the facilitation/coordination of programs for guests as needed.
  • Potentially participate in incident investigations, including providing written statements or documentation.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of Wasauksing First Nation and relevant external agencies/partners.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned by the Manager or Supervisor.
