About The Position

Japan Society is seeking a digital-native, highly reliable student to join their communications team as a Social Media Intern. This role involves capturing the energy of membership and public events to create compelling, cross-platform content. The intern will translate in-person experiences into engaging digital narratives for American and Japanese audiences. Additionally, the intern will serve as a frontline representative of Japan Society, engaging with guests and attendees professionally.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a degree-granting college or university program.
• A natural digital storyteller deeply aware of current social media formats and capable of communicating effectively with a cross-generational audience.
• A strategic creator who balances the fast pace of social media with the responsibility of maintaining the professional aesthetic of a major cultural institution.
• Highly reliable and professional.
• Able to read a room, interact gracefully with guests, and operate independently during busy events.
• Must be eligible to receive academic credit for this experience to comply with New York State labor laws.

Nice To Haves

• Proficiency with a DSLR camera.
• Conversational Japanese or a strong understanding of Japanese cultural nuances.

Responsibilities

• Attend weekly Japan Society events (primarily on-site, occasionally off-site) to capture high-quality video and photo content.
• Produce, edit, and optimize Reels and Stories to recap events and promote future programming across Instagram, TikTok, Threads, LinkedIn, X, BlueSky, and Facebook.
• Serve as a digital brand ambassador, ensuring all published content is creative, optimized for specific platforms, and strictly aligned with Japan Society’s visual and tonal identity.
• Act as an approachable, knowledgeable representative for the Society while operating on the event floor.
