SoC Systems Performance Engineer, Senior

Qualcomm•San Diego, CA
•$129,500 - $194,300

About The Position

Qualcomm’s Chip Architecture multi-site team of systems engineers, hardware architects, and software architects analyzes and defines next-generation system-on-chip (SoC) architectures for mobile, automotive, compute, and other product categories. This role focuses on SoC performance analysis and collaborates across the company with architects and engineers in hardware design and verification, software, marketing, and product planning. The engineer leads and conducts performance and systems studies; contributes to SoC architecture planning that considers performance, power, and thermal factors; and works with hardware and software teams to define multimedia, modem, compute, and memory technologies. The role defines complex use cases and new workloads, uses simulators, profilers, or hardware to identify performance bottlenecks and justify architectural changes or tuning, and applies computer architecture knowledge. It also involves communicating technical findings, resolving architectural questions, and inventing and filing patents for technical solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of system engineering or related work experience.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Industry experience in one or more of the listed areas: computer architecture; SoC system or chipset development; OS principles and hardware/software interaction; SoC buses, interconnects, memory technologies, memory controllers, scheduling, or MMUs; performance and power modeling; SystemC and event-driven simulators; profiling tools; C/C++ programming; VLSI design and verification; scripting and automation; ARM or Linux; or multimedia and communications technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • SoC system or chipset development experience, preferably in the mobile market.
  • Hands-on experience using and modifying simulators and performance/power models, especially full-system models.
  • Familiarity with ARM and Linux.
  • Familiarity with multimedia or communications technologies, including audio codecs, video codecs, cameras, WLAN, LTE, and 5G.
  • MS or PhD degree.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer market-leading SoC products with best-in-class performance.
  • Lead and conduct performance and systems studies.
  • Contribute to analysis defining SoC architecture plans that account for performance, power, and thermal considerations.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to define multimedia, modem, compute, and memory technologies.
  • Define complex use cases, including new workloads such as gaming and AI, and infer system requirements.
  • Use simulators, profilers, or hardware to understand performance bottlenecks and provide quantitative justification for architectural changes or tuning.
  • Apply computer architecture knowledge, including CPUs, GPUs, DSPs, cache coherency, and virtual memory.
  • Communicate technical and experimental results with technical leads and peers.
  • Creatively overcome obstacles to answer architectural questions.
  • Invent and file patents on technical solutions to relevant problems.

Benefits

  • Competitive annual discretionary bonus program.
  • Opportunity for annual RSU grants (employees on sales-incentive plans are not eligible for the annual bonus).
  • Competitive benefits package designed to support success at work, at home, and at play.
