About The Position

Micron Technology is seeking a Senior Systems Performance Engineer to join its Data Center Workload Engineering team. The role focuses on identifying and improving the performance of Micron memory and storage products in data center systems. The engineer will conduct hands-on performance investigations, understand system performance limits, and implement successful improvements while collaborating with SSD architects, product engineers, and customer teams as an individual contributor. The position involves studying production-class workloads and tracing application I/O through the system to the SSD. The engineer will evaluate performance and power, identify bottlenecks, test SSD features and system architectures, develop automation and analysis tools, and share data-backed findings through engineering reports, presentations, and customer-facing technical materials. The US base salary range is $116,000–$198,000 per year. Additional compensation may include benefits, bonuses, and equity. Individual pay depends on work location and job-related factors. Micron offers medical, dental, and vision plans, income-protection programs, paid family leave, paid time off, and paid holidays.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field and more than 3 years of experience; alternatively, a master's degree and more than 1 year of experience.
  • Experience in systems performance, application benchmarking, or workload characterization.
  • Hands-on experience deploying and debugging applications on Linux.
  • Working understanding of the storage I/O path, including Linux I/O, file systems, block storage, NVMe, and PCIe.
  • Proficiency with performance-analysis tools and Python or a similar language for problem investigation, test automation, and explaining results.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience testing AI infrastructure, databases, virtualization, high-performance computing, or distributed storage.
  • Knowledge of GPU-accelerated systems or AI frameworks.
  • Familiarity with software-defined or object storage solutions such as WEKA, Ceph, Cloudian, or MinIO.
  • Experience measuring power, efficiency, quality of service, or SSD behavior under application load.
  • Ability to build reusable analysis tools or present technical findings to wider audiences.
  • Working knowledge of AI-enabled productivity, automation, and analytics tools, such as Microsoft Copilot, Claude CoWork, GitHub Copilot, or Power Automate.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct repeatable studies of AI, database, virtualization, or distributed-storage workloads on production-class systems.
  • Plan tests with clear hypotheses, realistic configurations, and appropriate controls.
  • Trace application I/O through the system to the SSD, measuring efficiency, completion time, scaling, tail latency, consistency, and power.
  • Identify bottlenecks and test SSD features, system architectures, and competing solutions.
  • Provide data-backed recommendations for improvements.
  • Develop test automation and analysis tools, including AI-assisted workflows.
  • Share findings through engineering reports, presentations, and customer-facing technical material.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Income-protection programs in case of illness or injury
  • Paid family leave
  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • Additional compensation may include bonuses and equity
