About The Position

Teaching ski or snowboard lessons to students of all ages and abilities within the scope of current certification. Providing guided services for Mountain Tours or FAM tours, and safety orientations for school and youth groups. Assisting with other duties as assigned by Snow School Supervisors. Marmot Basin encourages professional development in its instructors and will strive to provide training towards future goals. Level 1 instructors can teach all age groups and progress students from never-skied to safely controlling speed and direction on blue terrain, including safe navigation of simple tree trails and use of lift systems. They educate students on the Alpine Responsibility Code and tailor lessons to student needs in a safe and fun manner. Level 2 instructors fulfill all Level 1 duties and can progress students to black groomed terrain, and introduce techniques for off-piste skiing/snowboarding in various conditions. They also take a leadership role in group organization.

• Self-motivated and able to work alone.
• CSIA level 1, level 2 or ISIA recognized (international) equivalent
• Physically fit and able to assist clients with standing.
• Can assist with some breaking of a student by skiing backwards in front of them.
• Be capable of skiing with students for a full day.
• Willingness to help with roles described in Additional Duties.
• Ability to work well under pressure (during busy periods, emergency situations, or difficult customers).

Nice To Haves

• Prior teaching experience is considered an asset
• Previous experience in a Snow Sports School is valued.
• Additional teaching qualifications are considered an asset. For example: dual certifications, Park, CADs, ACA, etc.

Responsibilities

• Teaching ski or snowboard lessons to students of all ages and abilities.
• Providing guided services for Mountain Tours or FAM tours.
• Providing safety orientations for school and youth groups.
• Assisting with other duties as assigned by Snow School Supervisors.
• Safely fitting equipment and progressing students through various terrain.
• Teaching the safe use of all lift systems.
• Educating students in the Alpine Responsibility Code.
• Tailoring lessons to student age, ability, and lesson type.
• Assisting guests using rental services.
• Progressing students from blue groomed terrain to black groomed terrain (L2).
• Safely introducing techniques for Off Piste skiing/snowboarding (L2).
• Taking a leadership role in group organization (L2).
• Organizing large groups in the meeting area (L2).
• Advocating safety in lessons and personal skiing.
• Being punctual for all line ups.
• Maintaining professionalism in and out of lessons, including wearing uniform and equipment professionally.
• Being approachable and friendly to all guests and other staff members.
• Acquiring proficient knowledge of the mountain to answer questions.
• Demonstrating a good understanding of high-performance skis, boots, and snowboards.
• Relaying customer comments to supervisors.
• Pointing out safety concerns.
• Assisting in emergency situations.
• Responding to customers in a courteous and professional manner.
• Ensuring compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
• Assisting other departments as needed and performing any other tasks as assigned.
