SMTS Quantum Integration Engineer

GlobalFoundries•Malta, NY
•$118,000 - $210,000

About The Position

The SMTS Quantum Integration Engineer is a senior technical contributor in GlobalFoundries’ Quantum Product Development organization. The role develops and integrates semiconductor technologies that enable scalable quantum computing systems, providing technical leadership across semiconductor device integration, BEOL interconnect technology, photonics integration, advanced packaging, cryogenic interfaces, and quantum hardware process development. The engineer drives integration architecture decisions, establishes experimental roadmaps, and leads development programs that transition emerging quantum concepts into manufacturable technologies. The position acts as a technical interface among device engineering, process development, manufacturing, modeling, design enablement, packaging, reliability, and external partners. It is an individual-contributor role without direct people-management responsibility. The role also supports GlobalFoundries’ ion-trap quantum computing roadmap by bridging quantum concepts with scalable semiconductor manufacturing solutions. The engineer performs work safely and supports Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.

  • Experience leading cross-functional technical programs or major development initiatives.
  • Strong analytical, experimental-design, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to engineering and leadership audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with advanced semiconductor integration, BEOL technologies, photonics integration, advanced packaging, or heterogeneous integration.
  • Knowledge of quantum computing hardware architectures, ion-trapping technologies, photonic systems, or cryogenic electronics.
  • Experience supporting advanced R&D programs funded through government, commercial, or academic partnerships.
  • Familiarity with MES systems and foundry processing.
  • Experience transitioning emerging technologies from research into development or manufacturing environments.
  • Project-management skills, including the ability to innovate and execute solutions and navigate ambiguity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of semiconductor integration architectures for quantum computing platforms.
  • Define integration strategies spanning front-end devices, BEOL routing, photonic interfaces, advanced packaging, interconnect technologies, and quantum-specific process modules.
  • Develop and maintain technology roadmaps for scalability, manufacturability, and qualification of quantum hardware.
  • Identify technology gaps and drive closure plans through internal development and external collaborations.
  • Lead definition and execution of integrated process flows, module interactions, process windows, and technology learning cycles.
  • Optimize integration using DOE methodologies, statistical analysis, and yield-learning techniques.
  • Establish integration checkpoints, performance metrics, and technical success criteria.
  • Evaluate technology tradeoffs involving performance, manufacturability, reliability, yield, cost, and scalability.
  • Collaborate with device engineering, process module teams, manufacturing, reliability, modeling, design enablement, and packaging organizations.
  • Translate quantum system requirements into semiconductor technology requirements and development plans.
  • Support customer and partner engagements through technical presentations, roadmap discussions, and program reviews.
  • Contribute to externally funded programs, strategic partnerships, and joint development agreements.
  • Analyze electrical, physical, reliability, and metrology data to identify integration challenges and improvement opportunities.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and corrective-action planning for integration-related issues.
  • Develop predictive models and learning frameworks to accelerate technology maturation.
  • Mentor junior engineers and MTS-level contributors and provide technical guidance across integration disciplines.
  • Influence organizational technical direction and contribute to invention disclosures, publications, patents, and technology strategy planning.
