SMT Process Engineer

Celestica International LP•Plano, TX

About The Position

The SMT Process Engineer designs, develops, deploys, and optimizes manufacturing processes to achieve quality, cost, and delivery goals for Celestica and its customers’ products. The role covers production-line architecture and capital planning, new product introduction, equipment engineering, process development, line balancing, and optimization. The engineer specifies and configures turnkey SMT production lines, evaluates capital expenditures, and integrates process machinery to meet technical specifications, quality requirements, and volume demand. For NPI, the role translates customer CAD and Gerber data into assembly and placement programs, then generates, tests, and validates programs across screen printers, solder paste inspection, pick-and-place machines, reflow ovens, and automated optical inspection equipment. The position also configures and calibrates vision systems and PCB fiducial recognition, selects nozzles and calibrates vacuum sensors, designs printing stencils and reflow thermal profiles, and manages component libraries, feeder mapping, placement sequences, and line workflows to maximize throughput and Components Per Hour while minimizing cycle times. Work is performed in a normal office environment, with occasional travel potentially required.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional engineering experience in SMT and PCBA manufacturing environments.
  • Applied practical knowledge of IPC-A-610 acceptability criteria for electronic assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience with DEK screen-printing equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with Koh Young SPI and AOI equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with Fuji AIMEX III or AIMEX III-R component placement equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with BTU International thermal reflow equipment.
  • Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to perform duties involving extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor, numbers, or detailed data.
  • Ability to perform frequent repetitive manual movements, such as data entry and use of a computer mouse or calculator.

Nice To Haves

  • Occasional travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Specify, configure, and lay out turnkey SMT production lines; evaluate related capital expenditures and select and integrate process machinery to meet technical specifications, quality requirements, and production volume demand.
  • Translate customer CAD and Gerber design data into machine-readable assembly and placement programs for New Product Introduction.
  • Generate, test, and validate programs and recipes across screen printers, solder paste inspection, pick-and-place machines, thermal reflow ovens, and automated optical inspection equipment.
  • Configure, teach, and calibrate optical vision systems and PCB fiducial recognition parameters for board alignment.
  • Select component nozzles according to packaging specifications and calibrate vacuum sensors to maintain placement accuracy.
  • Design and specify screen-printing stencils to control solder paste deposit geometry, aperture dimensions, and paste release efficiency.
  • Design, analyze, and manage multi-zone reflow oven thermal profiles to support solder alloy reflow and metallurgical joint integrity.
  • Develop, update, and manage component footprint libraries and package definitions according to assembly requirements.
  • Configure feeder mapping, optimize component pickup and placement sequences, and balance line workflows to maximize throughput and CPH while minimizing cycle times.
  • Apply and enforce IPC-A-610 acceptability criteria for electronic assemblies.
