SMT Process Engineer

Celestica•Plano, TX

About The Position

The SMT Process Engineer designs, develops, deploys, and optimizes manufacturing processes to achieve quality, cost, and delivery goals for Celestica and its customers’ products. The role focuses on surface-mount technology (SMT) and printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), from production-line architecture and capital planning through new-product introduction, equipment setup, process engineering, and line optimization. The engineer specifies, configures, and lays out turnkey SMT production lines; evaluates capital expenditures; and selects and integrates machinery to meet customer specifications, quality requirements, and production-volume demand. For new-product introduction, the role converts customer CAD and Gerber data into machine-readable programs and generates, tests, and validates recipes across the full SMT line, including screen printers, solder paste inspection, pick-and-place machines, reflow ovens, and automated optical inspection equipment. The role also configures and calibrates optical vision systems and PCB fiducial recognition, selects placement nozzles, and calibrates vacuum sensors. It designs and specifies stencils, manages multi-zone reflow thermal profiles, maintains component libraries, and optimizes feeder mapping, placement sequences, and line workflows to increase throughput and components per hour while reducing cycle time. The position is based in an office environment, with occasional travel possible.

Requirements

  • Over 5 years of professional engineering experience in SMT and PCBA manufacturing environments.
  • Practical knowledge and application of IPC-A-610 acceptability criteria for electronic assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience with DEK screen-printing equipment, Koh Young SPI and AOI inspection systems, Fuji AIMEX III or AIMEX III-R component placement equipment, and BTU International reflow equipment.
  • Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Specify, configure, and lay out turnkey SMT production lines; evaluate associated capital expenditures and select and integrate process machinery.
  • Translate customer CAD and Gerber data into machine-readable assembly and placement programs for new-product introduction.
  • Generate, test, and validate machine recipes and programs across SMT screen printers, solder paste inspection, pick-and-place machines, reflow ovens, and automated optical inspection equipment.
  • Configure, teach, and calibrate optical vision systems and PCB fiducial recognition parameters for board alignment.
  • Select nozzles according to component packaging specifications and calibrate vacuum sensors to maintain placement accuracy.
  • Design and specify screen-printing stencils to control solder-paste deposit geometry, aperture dimensions, and paste-release efficiency.
  • Design, analyze, and manage multi-zone reflow-oven thermal profiles to support solder-alloy reflow and joint integrity.
  • Develop, update, and manage component footprint libraries and package definitions.
  • Configure feeder mapping, optimize component pickup and placement sequences, and balance line workflows to maximize throughput and components per hour while minimizing cycle times.
