About The Position

The Center for Family Life in Sunset Park (CFL), is a nationally recognized social service organization located in Brooklyn, New York. At CFL, we are dedicated to fostering positive outcomes for children and adults by providing a comprehensive range of neighborhood-based family and social services. Our Cooperative Development Program (CDP) is a nationally recognized leader in developing worker cooperative businesses in low-income communities. Since 2006, we have launched 29 worker-owned cooperatives, supported over 600 worker-owners, and trained 50+ organizations in cooperative development. Together, we’re creating a new economy where workers are at the heart of the system. We’re looking for a dynamic and mission-driven Small Business Developer to join our team, eager to make a difference by supporting men and women, fostering economic equity, and shaping thriving small businesses. As a Small Business Developer, you’ll play a key role in strengthening worker cooperatives and advancing CFL’s initiatives.

Requirements

  • Fluency in English and Spanish is a must.
  • Capable of leading workshops and group meetings with ease.
  • Experienced in managing projects, meeting deadlines, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
  • Familiar with popular education methods for teaching business skills to adults.
  • Committed to social justice and economic empowerment, particularly for low-income women.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Business Administration, Social Work, Community Development) and at least three years of professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and inspire community groups to develop cooperative businesses.
  • Support workers in establishing strong governance and management systems in their businesses.
  • Collaborate with organizational partners to amplify business development efforts.
  • Provide tailored guidance and resources to help participants navigate their entrepreneurial journey.
  • Innovate and refine CFL’s cooperative development tools and guides.
  • Deliver hands-on business management support tailored to each cooperative’s stage of growth.
  • Coach worker-owners to build leadership and management skills.
  • Conduct essential research (e.g., market trends, legal/tax issues) and connect cooperatives with relevant resources.
  • Mediate and support resolution of conflicts within cooperative groups
  • Identify training needs for worker-owners.
  • Design workshops on different business management topics.
  • Facilitate workshops for adults using clear and basic language.
  • Use project management tools to organize and execute initiatives effectively.
  • Foster clear communication among stakeholders and adapt strategies as needed.
  • Ensure deliverables are met while navigating ambiguity with confidence and creativity.
  • Participate in team meetings, data tracking, and reporting efforts.
  • Contribute to outreach and special projects as required.
