About The Position

The primary role of the Lead is to work closely with the Production Supervisor, peers, and other departments to contribute to Valmont’s overall success. The Lead must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results. This position reports directly to the Production Supervisor and is responsible for driving the Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost metrics in the Shop. Effective communication, leadership, teamwork and motivation with all shop employees while adhering to Valmont’s standards, policies, and procedures are critical for this role.

Requirements

  • The ability to pass a forklift driver’s test
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to support divisional business objectives
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish tasks and reach goals through the work of the team
  • The ability to perform all Shop functions
  • The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Knowledge of and ability to use common shop mathematics, in feet, inches, degrees, and fractions, in reading complex prints, and standard specifications
  • The ability to solve problems and make an informed decision based on the situation
  • Communicate and interact with coworkers, at all levels, in a positive manner
  • Effectively interpret and present information both one-on-one and in front of a group

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree with 5+ years of relevant work experience, or 8+ years relevant experience is preferred
  • A strong working knowledge of current business systems and software (eg: IFS, QAD, Radley)
  • Demonstrated experience in a Leadership role
  • Practical hands-on experience in Lean Manufacturing

Responsibilities

  • Develop and communicate daily and weekly schedules to meet mill requirements, including Tubing and Structure’s needs.
  • Collaborate with the Production Supervisor, peers, and other departments to optimize manpower, machines, and equipment utilization.
  • Facilitate plant-wide communication regarding production activities and schedule compliance.
  • Monitor and coach employees to ensure adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Set clear daily expectations and follow up on production performance.
  • Train, coach, and develop employees to enhance operational efficiency and build team bench strength.
  • Act as the supervisor’s delegate in their absence and provide support across department roles as needed.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to identify losses and implement preventive actions.
  • Promote a continuous improvement mindset by encouraging team suggestions.
  • Ensure completion of inspection and quality assurance checks to meet customer specifications.
  • Review production cards regularly to ensure accuracy and progress.
  • Monitor, maintain, and procure production supplies, including PPE and consumables.
  • Operate key equipment, including forklifts, overhead cranes, shag trucks, railcar movers, and all operator stations of the Slitter.
  • Prepare and process intercompany offsite coil shipments, completing necessary inventory transactions.
  • Schedule and confirm the completion of weekly and monthly preventative maintenance tasks assigned to operators.
  • Work closely with the Maintenance team to coordinate and address equipment needs.
  • Calibrate key production tools to ensure compliance with ISO certification and other regulatory requirements.
  • Identify and correct inventory errors, ensuring accurate tagging and tracking.
  • Audit and maintain the scrap coil spreadsheet to manage slow-moving or rejected inventory for optimal utilization or disposal.
  • Support and enforce company policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Accept and respond to coaching and feedback to drive individual and team performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
