Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED plus six months of direct patient care experience or one year of postsecondary education.
  • Current enrollment in an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology.
  • Valid CPR/BCLS certification.
  • Proficiency in computer use.
  • Proficiency in communication (written and verbal).
  • Proficiency in social interaction.
  • Proficiency in customer service.
  • Proficiency in critical thinking.
  • Proficiency in teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Develops competency in and performs basic sleep testing procedures and associated interventions under direct supervision.
  • Reviews patient history and verifies medical orders.
  • Follows sleep center protocols related to the sleep study.
  • Verifies patient identification, collects documents, and obtains consent for the study.
  • Explains procedures and orients patients for in-center or out-of-center sleep testing.
  • Selects appropriate equipment and calibrates for testing to determine proper functioning and makes adjustments if necessary.
  • Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted publishing standards.
  • Follows protocols for various sleep studies (MSLT, MWT, parasomnia, PAP, oxygen titration) to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Performs physiological calibrations and makes necessary adjustments for proper signal quality.
  • Conducts “lights out” and “lights on” procedures to establish baseline values and verify data integrity.
  • Monitors data acquisition, identifies and corrects artifacts, and documents observations for scoring and interpretation.
  • Assists with patient safety and therapeutic interventions (e.g., PAP, oxygen administration).
  • Demonstrates proficiency in recognizing sleep vs. wake states and identifying clinical events during monitoring.
  • Prepares, cleans, and manages portable monitoring equipment; downloads and reviews data for artifacts or failures.
  • Educates patients for in-center and home sleep testing; ensures adherence to cleaning and disinfection protocols.
  • Provides age-specific care across all patient groups (neonatal to geriatric).
  • Ensures compliance with all safety, infection control, and HIPAA regulations.
  • Performs routine equipment care, maintenance, and inventory checks.
  • Maintains valid CPR/BCLS certification.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer use, communication (written and verbal), social interaction, customer service, critical thinking, and teamwork.
  • Follows sleep center quality assurance policies.
