About The Position

This position involves working under the direct supervision of a Tech II to perform Polysomnograms, CPAP titration, and MSLTs, and to learn how to score records. The role requires adherence to AASM guidelines and Sleep Center protocols, thorough annotation of recordings, and patient education. The technologist will also be responsible for troubleshooting equipment, attending record review sessions, and pursuing continuing education for professional growth.

Requirements

  • High School Required
  • Zero to one (0-1) year of experience as a polysomnographic technologist in a teaching hospital.
  • Knowledge of the respiratory system.
  • Competency in medical terminology.
  • Must be patient, have good interpersonal skills and be able to treat patients of various ages (babies to geriatric adults), backgrounds, with and without mental and/or physical limitations with respect and dignity.
  • Must be able to work as a team player (i.e. with physicians, other medical staff and colleagues).
  • Completion of the American Sleep Technologists Education Program (ASTEP).

Nice To Haves

  • College level neuroanatomy is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Performs polysomnograms.
  • Following departments guidelines performs CPAP titration adjusting levels appropriately.
  • Performs MSLTs (Multiple Sleep Latency Testing).
  • Scores at least one study during the night shift by applying AASM guidelines and Sleep center protocols
  • Annotates recordings thoroughly.
  • Marks all movements, changes in controls, activation, any unusual events and changes.
  • Allocates file number to recording, records patient name in log book and transfers data to network.
  • Fills out all necessary forms (patient history, tech report sheet, billing and patient consent forms).
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems with assistance from Tech II.
  • Educates patients (explains Polysomnography, CPAP titration and MSLT).
  • Attends record review sessions with polysomnographers and other technologists.
  • Study for RPSGT registration.
  • Attends seminars and pursues work related educational programs independently.
  • Keeps current with technology updates.
