About The Position

The Skilled Tradesman/Structural Carpenter is responsible for the construction or installation and repair of a variety of materials requiring accuracy and good appearance, such as doors, stairs, roofs, partitions, walls, hardware, and fixtures. Make repairs to office furniture, cabinets, etc. Operate a variety of power hand tools and woodworking machinery as required. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Requirements

  • The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma
  • Five years of verifiable experience in one or more of the skilled trades
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability to drive a vehicle
  • Ability to provide mathematical and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates for one or more of the skilled trades
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manuals, schematics, building plans, and/or work drawings to determine specifications and calculate requirements
  • Ability to maintain, repair, and renovate buildings as assigned
  • Ability to maintain inventory on needed parts and tools for one or more of the skilled trades
  • Ability to operate power tools
  • Ability to measure, cut, shape, assemble, and join moldings, wood materials, drywall and plastic materials, etc.
  • Ability to fit and install or apply doors, stairs, moldings, hardware, framing, sheet rock walls, drop-in ceiling systems, tile, carpet, and paint
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment

Nice To Haves

  • Possess or the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Experience operating construction equipment such as forklift, personnel lift, skid-steer, and backhoe
  • Ability to work on a team, supervise apprentices and other construction workers
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned
  • Work inclement weather schedule as assigned

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, repair materials made from wood, wood substitutes, light weight steel and other materials
  • Install a variety of wall and floor finish materials such as wood, tile, carpet, paint, tape and float sheet rock, and erect or remove walls and ceiling systems
  • Fit and install trim items, such as doors, stairs, moldings and hardware
  • Use accepted methods, practices, and safety precautions in completion of skilled trades work
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for clients
  • Understand verbal and written instructions
  • Willingness to work with a team, assist other skilled tradesmen to complete projects that require multiple trades and tradesmen to work together
  • Communicate professionally and appropriately with campus community and coworkers
  • Use work order software program to track assignments, document notes, and log time and materials used
  • Perform other duties as assigned; which may include painting, roofing, locksmithing, or other overlapping skilled trades
