About The Position

This is skilled work in the general trades which may include the supervision of semi-skilled helpers. An employee in this class is responsible for the alteration and maintenance of equipment and structures. Work involves determining work methods and frequent participation in work assignments, as well as responsibility for the quality of the work produced. Employee receives assignments in oral and written form, frequently accompanied by sketches, diagrams, and blueprints. Lays out and estimates time and materials for jobs. Assists Supervisor with planning of jobs. May aid other tradesmen in various areas such as installation of windows, doors, counters, cabinets, partitions and air conditioners; repair of ladders, racks, and horses; building and repair of roofs; painting interior and exterior of buildings; refinishing furniture; working on athletic fields. Assists with snow removal. May be required to remove a minor amount of asbestos-containing material. Overtime may be required. Any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds and/or other designated supervisor.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, and practices in the building maintenance and repair trades.
  • Thorough knowledge of the plumbing trade.
  • Possession of an Unlimited Plumbing P-1 or P-2 license.
  • Considerable skill in the use and care of hand and mechanical tools.
  • Ability to use trucks and other mechanical equipment usual to maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to work from drawings, sketches, oral, or written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to get along with children.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolding and work off lifts up to 40 feet.
  • Must possess a valid Connecticut driver’s license.
  • Must possess good physical health in order to perform the demands of the position.
  • Must have or acquire a certified pool operators certificate within 1 year from date of hire.
  • Seven years experience as a Journeyman Plumber.
  • Experience in heating and cooling.
  • Possession of an Unlimited Plumbing license, or any suitable equivalent combination of experience and training.

Nice To Haves

  • Must be trained, or willing to be trained, in asbestos removal.
  • Heating experience pertaining to boilers preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and replaces water pipes and fittings.
  • Repairs and replaces water tubing and lines for all heating, water, and sewer equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces temperature control valves, gauges, controls, dampers, modulating controls, and all related plumbing and heating equipment.
  • Repairs, adjusts and calibrates water and plumbing gauges and controls.
  • Repairs, adjusts and replaces as required oil burner controls and related equipment.
  • Lays out and estimates time and materials for jobs.
  • Assists Supervisor with planning of jobs.
  • May aid other tradesmen in installation of windows, doors, counters, cabinets, partitions and air conditioners.
  • May aid other tradesmen in repair of ladders, racks, and horses.
  • May aid other tradesmen in building and repair of roofs.
  • May aid other tradesmen in painting interior and exterior of buildings.
  • May aid other tradesmen in refinishing furniture.
  • May aid other tradesmen in working on athletic fields.
  • Assists with snow removal.
  • May be required to remove a minor amount of asbestos-containing material.
  • Overtime may be required.
