About The Position

As part of the Education, Innovation, Programs and Services Branch, you will work in the Career Pathways Division to provide direction and integrated leadership to the Regional Centres for Education (RCEs) and le Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP) regarding the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of policies, guidelines, programming, and services. The Provincial Skilled Trades Consultant’s primary responsibility will be supporting Skilled Trades and Trades-Related Learning in Nova Scotia Public Schools. They will work collaboratively with the Career Pathways team, provincial Youth Pathways Consultants, EECD colleagues, and external partners to support the academic achievement and well-being of all students. The Provincial Skilled Trades Consultant reports directly to the Director of Career Pathways. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Education and hold a Certificate of Qualification as a Journeyperson; A Bachelor of Education with teachable in Technology Education; Certificate of Technology Education (NSAC) with a Bachelor of Education; Diploma in Technology Education and a Master of Education degree or equivalent or Certificate of Qualification as a Journeyperson with minimum (8) years experience teaching in a NS Skilled Trades Centre.
  • A minimum (8) eight years experience teaching Skilled Trades or Technology Education courses.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Nova Scotia Skilled Trades curriculum and the importance of trades-related learning.
  • Strong decision-making and leadership skills.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, communication, research and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups, community partners/members and colleagues.
  • Valid driver’s license as travel is required across the province.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an education leadership role would be an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of machine and tool safety and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in experiential and community-based learning
  • Experience in project management.
  • Bilingualism (fluent in French and English).

Responsibilities

  • Provide provincial leadership for skilled trades curricula and programming within the public education system, including Skilled Trades 10, Service Trades 10, Construction Trades 11, Culinary Trades 11, Transportation Trades 11, Manufacturing Trades 11
  • Support skilled trades curriculum development and renewal.
  • Liaise with RCEs/CSAP and school safety committees in relation to hot work, training for Skilled Trades Centre lab equipment, etc.
  • Support and maintain Safety-Net Training, Safety Protocols in Skilled Trades and Technology Education, and Hot Work Procedures in NS Public Schools documents
  • Support new school planning/construction by providing expertise regarding Skilled Trades learning spaces and required tools and equipment
  • Skilled trades facility support
  • Support Ministerial Mandate priorities related to skilled trades and related learning
  • Investigate and strengthen post-secondary options for skilled trades and technology education teacher training
  • Assist with career readiness and resource development
  • Support the High Skills Major (HSM) in Skilled Trades Certificate program expansion.
  • Assist with expansion of community-based learning opportunities and partnerships in areas related to subject specialization
  • Support summer sector program delivery
  • Liaise with Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency and sector partners such as NS Construction Sector Council and Atlantic Masonry Institute
  • Skilled Trades data management and budget oversight
  • Support schools in applying to offer skilled trades courses outside of Skilled Trades Centres, including review of applications and required documentation
  • Support provincial mandates and initiatives related to skilled trades education
  • Contribute to internal and external reports, briefings, and planning documents related to skilled trades and career pathways
  • Other related duties as assigned
