About The Position

The Skilled Maintenance Worker is responsible for applying journeyman-level skills to repair and maintain a variety of building systems, fixtures, and equipment across Stafford County Public School facilities. Employees are assigned responsibility for completing maintenance work in the general categories of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, kitchen equipment, roofing, and general equipment repair, following established trade practices and applicable codes and regulations. Work may be performed inside and outside of school facilities and may include leading a team of maintenance personnel on assigned projects.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship in a relevant professional trade is required.
  • Four (4) years of experience in one of the skilled trades: HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing or Low Voltage is required.
  • Experience performing skilled maintenance work at the journeyman trade level on a school physical plant or comparable commercial/institutional facility is required.
  • Journeyman-level trade certification or apprenticeship completion certificate in a relevant skilled trade is required.
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of commercial food service (kitchen) equipment repairs, maintenance, and installation.
  • Knowledge of the operations and general maintenance work required to support a school's physical plant and preventive maintenance program.
  • Knowledge of the hazards of the maintenance trades and safety precautions utilized to minimize risks.
  • Ability to read blueprints and other construction drawings.
  • Ability to operate a computer-based work order management system.
  • Ability to apply journeyman-level skills across multiple trade disciplines including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and equipment repair.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions and work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, administrators, and co-workers.
  • Ability to lead a team of maintenance personnel to accomplish a project effectively and safely.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including the PM shift (2:00 PM – 10:00 PM), and be available on call when needed.
  • Must be able to work during inclement weather as a designated essential employee.

Nice To Haves

  • Journeyman-level training or apprenticeship completion in one or more of the following trades: Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Masonry, HVAC, or a related building systems field required.
  • Demonstrated journeyman-level skills in one or more skilled trades including HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Masonry, or equipment repair.
  • Virginia DPOR tradesman registration in Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, or related trade preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 construction or general industry safety certification preferred.
  • EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Lead-Safe certification preferred.
  • Experience operating a computer-based work order management system preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, or replace flush valves, faucets, water valves and piping, and circulation pumps; perform other basic plumbing work as required.
  • Maintain, repair, or replace fluorescent light fixtures and ballasts, interior and exterior light fixtures, switches, receptacles, and plugs; perform other basic electrical work as required.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on heating, air conditioning, food service, refrigeration, ventilation, and low voltage systems throughout all assigned school facilities.
  • Repair doors, door locks, panic bars, dry erase boards, and bulletin boards; build shelves, cabinets, temporary partitions, and perform other basic carpentry as assigned.
  • Maintain and repair commercial kitchen equipment, roofing systems, folding bleachers, grandstands, and athletic equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, or replace sidewalks, pavements, pavement markings, fences, and masonry; perform landscaping, tree pruning/removal, and sports turf maintenance as assigned.
  • May be assigned to lead a team of maintenance personnel to plan, organize, and accomplish a maintenance project.
  • Respond to requests for building services from school staff, administrators, and building service managers promptly and professionally.
  • Prepare reports, work orders, timesheets, logs, and records as required.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal during inclement weather events.
  • Assist other trades as necessary.
  • Report to work as designated essential personnel during emergency closings, delays, or unforeseen situations as directed by the supervisor.
