Toyota’s maintenance department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Tool & Die Group Leader. The primary responsibility of this role is to supervise a team responsible for building, repairing, and maintaining high volume stamping dies, troubleshooting line side die issues, and completing repairs on the production line. Reporting to the Production Manager, the person in this role will support the manufacturing operation while ensuring adherence to all company policies, state and federal Laws and the union Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). This position is based in Long Beach, California. The selected candidate must reside within a commutable distance of the work location. This position is scheduled for second shift, with flexibility required based on business needs.

Requirements

  • Industrial maintenance experience or equivalent experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong leadership with the ability to build trust, communicate effectively, and work well with others.
  • Hands-on experience building, maintaining, and repairing high-volume stamping dies, including welding, spotting, and hand-finishing.
  • Working knowledge of sheet metal stamping processes, including cutting and forming operations.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting with the ability to solve problems in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Technical expertise in Tool & Die, welding, and machining operations.
  • Ability to accurately document work using Maximo, other CMMS/EAM systems, written records, and comparable electronic tracking tools.
  • A continuous improvement mindset, with a strong focus on safety, quality, productivity, and operational performance.
  • Effective presentation, project management, decision-making, and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a manufacturing, maintenance, or Tool & Die environment.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing skilled trades team members.
  • Automotive manufacturing experience, particularly in stamping operations.
  • Experience with Toyota Business Practices (TBP), Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience working in a union-represented or collective bargaining environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily Tool & Die operations while supporting key performance indicators related to Safety, Quality, Productivity, Cost, and Team Member Development.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop a team of Tool & Die Team Members, ensuring safe work practices and technical excellence.
  • Coordinate planned and unplanned stamping die maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities to support production requirements.
  • Review repair needs, estimate repair timelines, and prioritize work based on production demands and business needs.
  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on support for die repair, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Verify quality and completeness of repair work performed by team members.
  • Manage Maximo work orders and maintenance documentation to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
  • Develop and manage tooling maintenance schedules, including die chroming and refurbishment activities.
  • Lead problem-solving efforts and implement short-term and long-term countermeasures to improve equipment reliability and performance.
  • Conduct daily KYT (Kiken Yochi Training) and safety discussions with team members.
  • Facilitate monthly department safety meetings and promote a strong safety-first culture.
  • Manage overtime equalization, vacation scheduling, and workforce planning within the department.
  • Maintain tooling inventory and satellite stores to ensure readiness and availability of repair materials.
  • Collaborate with Production, Engineering, Maintenance, and Quality teams to support business objectives and continuous improvement initiatives.
