About The Position

This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of skilled construction activities in areas such as concrete, structural steel erection, welding, millwrighting, and carpentry. Incumbents may serve as a lead to Construction Workers or Laborers in the absence of a Job Foreman or Job Superintendent. The Skilled Construction Worker is the third level of an eight-level construction series and is distinguished from the Construction Worker by the skill and experience level required to perform tasks in three specialized trade areas. It is also distinguished from the Job Foreman, which has responsibility for coordinating tasks within a project and serving as a lead to construction crews.

Requirements

Knowledge of equipment uses and practices.
Knowledge of work zone safety and OSHA job site regulations.
Skilled craft techniques (specific knowledge of a trade, ex; concrete, steel, carpentry, millwright).
Knowledge of hand and power tool operation.
Knowledge of company personnel policies.
Knowledge of City, state, and federal laws.
Reading blueprints, specifications, engineering plans.
Coordinating tasks and/or projects.
Operating hand and power tools.
Performing craftwork in area of expertise (see above).
Operating heavy equipment such as backhoes, end loaders, power tools and all trucks.
Problem solving.
Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
Four years of construction-related experience specializing in two or more trades.
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties such as those listed above.

Responsibilities

Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
Prepares layouts, using measuring tape, framing square, calipers; and marks cutting and assembly lines on materials.
Shapes materials to prescribed measurements; assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with appropriate tools; verifies trueness of structure with layout tools; and erects framework for structures and lays sub flooring.
Builds stairs and lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work.
Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware.
Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
Certified welders should be able to read weld symbols and identify a weld meets specifications, have an understanding of maintenance and calibration of welding machines, understand proper handling of welding material and gases.
Levels concrete to specified depth and workable consistency, using hand-held screed and floats to bring water to surface and produce soft topping; and smooths and shapes surfaces of freshly poured concrete, using straight edge and float or power screed.
Finishes or repairs concrete surfaces to specified finish, may specialize in finishing steps and stairways, or may break up and repair old concrete surfaces.
Aligns material to specified connections; verifies vertical and horizontal alignment of materials.
Qualified in rigging & hoisting of materials.
Performs millwright duties by reading blueprints and schematic drawings to determine layout of equipment; dismantling machines; moving machinery and equipment, using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks; and, assembling and installing equipment, such as shafting, conveyors, and tram rails.
Serves as a lead to Laborers, Construction Workers, and other Skilled Construction Workers by monitoring and assigning work to construction crew in the absence of a Foreman or Superintendent.
Ensures that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
Brings problems to the attention of the Superintendent, Field Safety Coordinator or HR Manager.
Performs additional duties as assigned to support project and organizational success.
