About The Position

The Ski Patrol Assistant Supervisor is a senior, experienced Patroller who provides experience and leadership to the overall Public Safety team, monitoring snow slopes to ensure the safety of all guests and staff at the Ski Area, and providing prompt, efficient, and courteous first aid response to those in need. Assistant Supervisors are leads for their cross-functional team of ski patrollers and will work with these direct reports on timely goals for the period- such as mountain setup, staffing for busier periods, training plans and formal performance reviews. Assistant Supervisors report directly to the Ski Patrol Supervisor and work closely with and under the direction of the Senior Supervisor Public Safety. Assistant Supervisors participate in all matters of risk management and works closely with all Mountain Operations teams, interacting with all Ski Area departments.

Requirements

• Advanced First Aid (80 hrs) or equivalent first aid training.
• Valid BLS CPR certificate.
• Canadian Avalanche Association Operations Level 1.
• Must have worked in Ski Patrol or Snow Safety for five full winter seasons at Sunshine Village, or seven full winter seasons as a Ski Patroller at a similar resort (minimum 5 months per season).
• Previous leadership roles or experience.
• Valid Alberta motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Able to operate UTV, highway vehicle, and snowmobile.
• Expert skiing ability in all types of snow on challenging alpine terrain. Skiing for work requires completion of a competency test, skiing and riding professionally, and may be restricted to designated areas.
• Able to work effectively under pressure during emergency situations.
• Comfortable working at height or in exposed areas of a mountain environment.
• Positive, friendly, and professional attitude.
• Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally.
• Demonstration standard radio communication skills and etiquette.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Excel) and familiar with InfoEx system.
• Prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Prepared to work flexible schedules (weekends, holidays).
• Effectively provide support and assistance to coworkers.
• Must be neat, alert, punctual and dependable.
• Ability to exercise good judgement is essential and a key requirement of the position.
• Ability to ski for long periods of time (spending the day in ski boots is normal), constant trunk rotation, frequent lifting, pushing/pulling of equipment, patients, and tools (up to 45 kg).
• Requires working at heights, occasionally climbing ladders, ascending inclined slopes up to 60% (30°).
• Exposure to extreme environments (temperature and wind) and remote work.
• May operate machinery and works around moving equipment.
• Adhere to high standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
• Required uniform pieces (jacket, pants) are provided.
• Certain equipment must be provided by the employee in advance, and during employment: Alpine or Telemark downhill skis with releasable bindings, Ski poles, Ski boots, Ski helmet (ASTM F2040; CEN 1077; Snell RS-98; Z263.1 certified), Digital Avalanche Transceiver (less than 5 years old), Avalanche Rescue Shovel, Avalanche Rescue Collapsible Probe, Insulated winter boots with rubber sole, Alpine harness with releasable leg loops, Headlamp.

• Canadian Avalanche Association Introduction to Weather and Avalanche Search and Rescue 2 preferred.
• Valid AB Non-Mining Avalanche Control Blaster’s permit preferred.
• Facilitator of debriefs following critical incidents. Additional outside support resources also available.

Responsibilities

• Oversee, support and encourage a positive team environment by imparting knowledge, assisting with the organization of training, and maintaining balance through effective communication by working closely with all staff.
• Accountable for the development of safe work procedures and hazard assessments for all tasks within the scope of work.
• Set a good example for safe work.
• Be an active member in avalanche control and lead their team to obtain that skill set in collaboration with the Lead Avalanche Forecaster.
• Act as a mountain safety ambassador managing and mitigating risk in the mountain environment.
• Conduct regular inspections of the mountain, workspaces, and Village infrastructure to identify risk, report findings, and recommend corrective action.
• Provide prompt, efficient and courteous assessment, treatment and transport to those who require it.
• Act as a senior patroller when requested to assist at medical or other emergency scenes.
• Be extremely knowledgeable about the ski area, its operational boundaries, and nearby backcountry.
• Enforce ski area policies within the limits of authority.
• Participate in public and staff education on safe skiing and riding at the ski area and elsewhere.
• Maintain signage, equipment, and monitor the conditions of slopes.
• Act with autonomy; allowing individuals or teams to make informed decisions which follow protocols and procedures without excessive influence or direct supervision.
• Implement the Sunshine Village Emergency Response Plan and all Emergency Response Assistance Plans, including, but not limited to Medical and/or Trauma, Avalanche rescue, Lift and Gondola evacuation, High Angle rescue, Search & Rescue and Security emergencies.
• Undertake Scene Commander, Base Commander and/or Incident Commander functions on all types of emergency response.
• Train trainers in lift, gondola, and self-evacuation procedures and rope rescue techniques.
• Review and develop training programs on an ongoing and annual basis.
• Lead avalanche rescue and control operations, as and when required: documenting all training, being proficient in explosives deployment, preparation, handling, transportation, recording, and storage.
• Perform weather and snowpack observation and contribute to the daily avalanche forecasts.
• Effectively handle a toboggan in all terrain, along with operating a snowmobile and other oversnow vehicles within abilities, after initial or recurrent training is completed in accordance with the Snowmobile Training Program.
• Act as a leader and mentor to Public Safety team members along with other Mountain Operations staff.
• Direct and supervise daily operation of Ski Patrol in the absence of the Ski Patrol Supervisor.
• Lead accident investigations and ensure complete documentation and record-keeping.
• Complete all required documentation in a timely fashion following emergency responses.
• Provide timely and accurate incident and deficiencies reporting to appropriate departments/personnel.
• Act as a trainer for incident report forms and the digital documentation system.
• Facilitate completion of individual Patroller training checklists and continuing education.
• Assist with health and safety training of employees, confirm they understand safety protocols and procedures and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and regulations among the team.
• Be trained and able to work alongside Dispatcher in the event relief dispatch duties are required or requested.
• Perform other duties as requested and assigned from time to time.
