About The Position

Philadelphia Youth Basketball, Inc. (PYB), a nonprofit enterprise, is seeking to hire Coach Mentors for our Middle School Partnership Program (MSPP). PYB’s mission is to create opportunities for young people in the Philadelphia region, especially those from under resourced communities, to reach their potential as students, athletes, and positive leaders. Our program models are designed to empower young people to build positive relationships with learning and school, peers and adults, and their communities and future trajectories, using a research based social and emotional learning (SEL) framework. The Early School Partnership Program (ESPP) is an after school youth development program for elementary school students at Pennell School, 1800 Nedro Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19141. Programming takes place for two hours per day, three days per week, on either Monday, Wednesday, and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Sessions combine age appropriate basketball instruction, structured play, enrichment, and relationship building activities. The Site Lead Coach Mentor leads ESPP programming at Pennell School. This person plans and facilitates sessions, guides the other Coach Mentor and any supporting staff, maintains accurate attendance and documentation, and serves as the main day to day contact for school leaders and the designated PYB supervisor. The Site Lead ensures students experience a safe, organized, and engaging program.

Requirements

Experience working with elementary school students in coaching, teaching, mentoring, or youth programming.
Knowledge of basketball fundamentals and the ability to teach them in an engaging, age appropriate way.
Ability to manage groups, build positive relationships, and respond calmly to behavior challenges.
Strong leadership, communication, and organization skills, including the ability to guide another Coach Mentor and maintain accurate records.
Commitment to youth development, equity, teamwork, and PYB’s mission.
Reliable transportation and ability to report to Pennell School on time for assigned program days.
Ability to complete required background clearances and training before working with students.

Responsibilities

Lead two hour after school sessions three days per week and set the daily plan with the Coach Mentor.
Prepare and facilitate age appropriate basketball, enrichment, team building, and social and emotional learning activities.
Assign responsibilities, support the Coach Mentor, and maintain consistent routines, transitions, and expectations.
Ensure program spaces and equipment are ready before students arrive and properly cleaned up afterward.
Build caring, consistent relationships with students and model respect, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy decision making.
Adapt activities to students’ developmental, emotional, and physical needs while maintaining clear routines and expectations.
Use developmentally appropriate, restorative responses to behavior and conflict, and follow PYB safety and reporting procedures.
Check in with Pennell School leaders and the designated PYB supervisor about schedules, space, student needs, and program updates.
Track and submit student attendance and required program documentation accurately and on time.
Communicate student successes, concerns, incidents, and needed follow up to the appropriate school and PYB staff.
Monitor daily site operations and help the team follow PYB policies on youth safety, conduct, confidentiality, timekeeping, and facility use.
Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and coaching support opportunities.
