About The Position

Philadelphia Youth Basketball, Inc. (PYB), a nonprofit enterprise, is seeking to hire Coach Mentors for our Middle School Partnership Program (MSPP). PYB’s mission is to create opportunities for young people in the Philadelphia region, especially those from under resourced communities, to reach their potential as students, athletes, and positive leaders. Our program models are designed to empower young people to build positive relationships with learning and school, peers and adults, and their communities and future trajectories, using a research based social and emotional learning (SEL) framework. The Early School Partnership Program (ESPP) is an after school youth development program for elementary school students at Pennell School, located at 1800 Nedro Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19141. Programming takes place three days per week for two hours each day, for a total of six program hours per week. The schedule will be either Monday, Wednesday, and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Each session will include age appropriate basketball skill development, structured play, enrichment, and relationship building activities. The Coach Mentor supports ESPP programming at Pennell School under the direction of the Site Lead Coach Mentor. This person helps plan and facilitate engaging sessions, builds positive relationships with students, and assists with safe transitions, daily operations, and program documentation.

Requirements

Experience working with elementary school students in coaching, teaching, mentoring, or youth programming.
Knowledge of basketball fundamentals and the ability to teach them in an engaging, age appropriate way.
Ability to manage groups, build positive relationships, and respond calmly to behavior challenges.
Commitment to youth development, equity, teamwork, and PYB’s mission.
Reliable transportation and ability to report to Pennell School on time for assigned program days.
Ability to complete required background clearances and training before working with students.

Responsibilities

Support two hour after school sessions three days per week and review the daily plan with the Site Lead.
Lead assigned basketball, enrichment, team building, and social and emotional learning activities.
Help set up equipment and program spaces, guide transitions, and clean up after each session.
Keep students engaged and communicate adjustments or student needs to the Site Lead.
Build caring, consistent relationships with students and model respect, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy decision making.
Adapt activities to students’ developmental, emotional, and physical needs while maintaining clear routines and expectations.
Use developmentally appropriate, restorative responses to behavior and conflict, and follow PYB safety and reporting procedures.
Work closely with the Site Lead to carry out the session plan and maintain a safe, organized program environment.
Record or share attendance information with the Site Lead so required records can be submitted accurately and on time.
Promptly report student successes, concerns, incidents, and follow up needs to the Site Lead and appropriate PYB staff.
Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and coaching support opportunities.
Follow PYB policies on youth safety, conduct, confidentiality, timekeeping, and facility use.
