About The Position

The Site EHS Lead will be responsible for directing and supporting EHS programs at the facility to ensure compliance with laws, regulations and GSK Standards, and ensure that EHS-related risks and impacts are effectively managed. Act as a champion for EHS across the site and work with managers, supervisors and other staff to help them improve EHS management and performance in their areas of responsibility. The role includes strategic planning, tactical interventions, and day-to-day support for operations. Direct management of site EHS staff. Requirements

Bachelor's of science degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in industrial safety, industrial hygiene, or a branch of engineering or physical science that included organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of engineering, ventilation, industrial safety, process safety, biostatistics, toxicology or industrial hygiene.
Professional ABIH Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or BCSP Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification is required.
Minimum of 10 years in EHS
Minimum 3 years of leadership experience
Experience with risk reduction projects in a manufacturing environment.
Experience with the requirements and practical implementation of federal, state and local EHS legislation, including (e.g., OSHA, HAZMAT, DOT, IATA, CWA, RCRA, EPA, SARA).
Experience with EHS issues i.e. machinery, chemical agents, fire, ergonomics, occupational and environmental noise, workplace transport, environmental emissions, waste, and effluent management.
Collection, analysis, and interpretation of EHS data for professional and lay audiences

Nice To Haves

Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) preferred.
MS Degree
Qualified in first-aid and/or incident command.
Biopharm, Biotech or vaccine manufacturing experience, to include processes, equipment, EHS issues and good practices.
Application of GPS and techniques to EHS issues (e.g. through Orange Belt certification).
Proficient in the continuous improvement framework.
Current member of relevant professional EHS institution (e.g. American Society of Safety Professionals, American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists).

Responsibilities

Lead the development and implementation of site EHS strategy and associated annual plans (Business Continuity, Crisis Communication, etc).
Lead site audits and facilitate Independent Business Monitoring audits.
Lead, manage, and develop the site EHS Team creating a sustainable EHS organization capable of handling day-to-day EHS and risk operations as well as emerging issues.
Establish and monitor EHS objectives, metrics and targets that reflect local needs and are aligned with GSC and legal expectations. Identify and support actions necessary to ensure these are achieved.
Advise management on EHS risks/impacts and on compliance with GSK and legal requirements.
Advise management on requirements for capital and operational expenditure to support EHS.
Ensure focus is maintained on EHS priorities through proactive communication and support.
Manage contracts with relevant suppliers of EHS services and manage and evaluate their performance.
Coordinate EHS risk assessment, mitigation and escalation activities across all site operations and functions (including resident and project contractors).
Advise management on the suitability and effectiveness of controls.
Integrate risk assessments, management and governance processes into the business (core areas include industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, biosafety, and high risk work).
Ensure that significant EHS risks are included in the site risk register, discussed at site RMCB meetings, and that appropriate mitigation plans are developed and implemented.
Coordinate and test local business continuity, emergency response, and crisis management plans.
Develop and coordinate site EHS programs based on a management system approach with an emphasis on key EHS risks for the site (e.g. machinery, chemical agents, ergonomics, fire protection, occupational and environmental noise, workplace transport, waste and effluent management).
Maximize the success of capital investment projects and new product introductions by proactively integrating EHS issues during all stages of design, construction, commissioning and validation.
Review and track investigations of injuries, illnesses, environmental releases, non-injury accidents and near-misses to ensure they identify and resolve root causes.
Ensure compliance with local/state/federal environmental permit conditions and regulatory reporting requirements.
Serve as primary contact for above site and external groups (e.g. regulators, local emergency services.)
Support local community relations by serving as initial point of contact for neighbors and city officials.
Ensure key EHS risks are effectively managed and, where appropriate, escalated to senior management.
Utilize performance systems to set targets, monitor performance, and achieve site EHS targets and objectives in line with GSC and GSK expectations.
Resolve regulatory and other EHS issues to enable capital projects and new product introductions to be implemented on time and on budget.
Raise performance by establishing improvement processes and setting objectives.
