About The Position

The IWK Simulation Program is administered through the Nursing and Professional Practice Portfolio. Simulation-based education is provided to health professionals and interprofessional teams throughout the IWK as well as to medical and health professions students in the pediatric, neonatal, and obstetrical specialties. Simulation-based education is primarily delivered in either the IWK Simulation Centre or in-situ clinical sites; however, the program may coordinate off-site simulation sessions and consult on simulation activities with internal and external partners. The primary focus of the program is to support excellence in clinical practice by providing simulated clinical experiences for IWK medical and health professions staff and students. The IWK program also works with partners such as Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Health, Nova Scotia Health, and others to deliver pediatric/neonatal/obstetrical simulation-based education. The IWK simulation program is one of four programs within the Halifax-based Sim Ed Collaborative. The Simulation Consultant is the first point of contact for simulation-based learning in IWK Health. They are a skilled adult educator with specific mastery of all aspects of simulation-based learning. The Simulation Consultant provides clinical, operational, and academic leadership related to simulation-based program and curriculum development, oversight of the execution of simulation activities, and evaluation of simulation and program objectives. They have expertise in interprofessional simulation-based learning as well as the use of simulation in emergency response training, patient safety, and environmental development.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a Health Profession.
  • Registered health professional with current license or eligible for licensure, applicable to profession, to practice in the province of Nova Scotia.
  • Successful completion of a Simulation instructor program or equivalent combination of knowledge and experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience working in an educator role (such as preceptor, orientation, mentorship) with experience in simulation-based learning is required.
  • PALS and/or NRP and/or ACLS training required.
  • Experience in leading projects or displaying leadership in the workplace is required.
  • Experience with professional organizations, interprofessional teams, and diverse learner groups is essential.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to manage conflict in a high-demand environment.
  • Displays flexibility and adaptability to multiple competing program requests.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator an asset (e.g.: Society for Simulation in Healthcare CHSE designation).
  • Competencies in other languages are an asset.
