Silicon Photonics Test Development Engineer (2027 New College Graduate)

GlobalFoundries•Essex, VT
•$58,400 - $100,800

About The Position

This new college graduate role is part of GlobalFoundries’ Test Development organization and supports silicon photonics semiconductor technologies for high-speed data center, high-performance computing, and hyperscale computing applications. The engineer will develop and improve automated optical and electrical test solutions to characterize photonic integrated circuits (PICs), analyze device performance, and support reliable technology development and product qualification. The role includes creating, executing, and documenting test plans; performing device and circuit characterization; and developing high-speed test methods. The engineer will analyze characterization data, troubleshoot hardware, software, and data-quality issues, communicate results in technical reviews, and work with cross-functional teams to improve test coverage, throughput, and measurement capability. The position also requires safe and responsible work practices and support for Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.

Requirements

  • Graduating with a bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Photonics, Optical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited degree program.
  • At least a 3.0 overall GPA and proven good academic standing.
  • English fluency, written and verbal.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior related internship or co-op experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in the workplace, school projects, competitions, or similar settings.
  • Interest in using AI tools and emerging technologies to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and support decision-making.
  • Project management skills, including the ability to innovate and execute solutions and navigate ambiguity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Advanced programming experience in a Linux environment using Python and C/C++; experience with R or Perl is a plus.
  • Foundational knowledge of silicon photonics, optical and electrical device characterization, high-speed or mm-wave circuits, statistics, and experimental test methodology.
  • Hands-on laboratory, capstone, or research experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and document optical and electrical test plans for silicon photonic integrated circuits, including automated instrument control, test sequencing, data acquisition, and analysis in a Linux environment using Python and C/C++.
  • Perform device and circuit characterization, including DC current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V), optical insertion loss, waveguide loss, wavelength response, fiber-to-chip coupling efficiency, photodetector responsivity, modulator transfer characteristics, and electro-optic bandwidth measurements.
  • Own and improve high-speed test methods using vector network analyzers, optical power meters, tunable lasers, oscilloscopes, optical spectrum analyzers, stimulus and measuring units, probe stations, and RF/optical probes.
  • Support calibration, de-embedding, correlation, measurement repeatability, and uncertainty evaluation.
  • Analyze large characterization datasets using AI and statistical methods to identify trends, outliers, correlations, and sources of variation.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, and data-quality issues.
