Silicon Photonics Design Engineer

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc•UNAVAILABLE, New York

About The Position

AMD is seeking a seasoned technical contributor to drive end-to-end delivery of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) solutions for optical I/O in next-generation AI and HPC applications. The role contributes to and coordinates implementation and optimization across multiple teams, working with hardware engineering teams and AMD partners to plan, develop, and optimize PIC solutions. The position focuses on advanced silicon photonics and next-generation GPU computing. The successful candidate will bring substantial experience in photonic PDK, device, and circuit design, and expertise spanning PIC theory, design, layout, simulation, packaging, debug, test, manufacturing, reliability, qualification, and support. The role also requires attention to design-for-excellence and software while managing schedules and costs, along with strong communication and teamwork skills.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong expertise in PIC theory, design, layout, simulation, packaging, debugging, testing, manufacturing, reliability, qualification, and support.
  • Significant success driving photonic PDK, device, and circuit design.
  • Meticulous attention to design-for-excellence and software, while driving schedules and managing costs.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing PICs that have reached high-volume manufacturing, from concept through field failure analysis.
  • Subject matter expertise in silicon photonics foundry technology, device design, and circuit layout, including FDTD, MODE, or related design tools.
  • Proficiency in software architecture and development for photonic design automation, test automation, and data analysis; Python and Cadence development experience is preferred.
  • Experience with photonic wafer-, die-, and package-level testing and related test instrumentation.
  • Excellent communication, management, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with leading thinkers and senior architects and work across teams in different geographies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop optical-engine systems using advanced silicon photonics process technologies for DWDM and CWDM applications in next-generation AI and HPC.
  • Innovate and define products and specifications for PIC architectures, transmitter and receiver chains, components, and test methodologies for next-generation optical I/O applications.
  • Work with systems teams to devise, maintain, simulate, and optimize optical I/O link budgets based on product requirements, PIC architectures, channel properties, active and passive component limits, and foundry process capabilities.
  • Collaborate on design-for-test best practices to prepare photonic devices for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Participate in design reviews as a subject matter expert in silicon photonic component design.
  • Work cross-functionally with EIC, packaging, foundry technology, test development, and product teams to architect design and test automation solutions.

Benefits
