About The Position

The City of Hampton is seeking a dedicated, safety-focused professional to perform skilled traffic maintenance work involving traffic signs, barriers, and guardrails. The position supports traffic operations, public safety, and emergency response efforts throughout the City. The role requires strong traffic operations experience, knowledge of tools and equipment, and the ability to work effectively with the public and team members. Work may take place in challenging conditions and outside standard hours, and the employee may be considered essential personnel during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Strong experience in traffic operations.
Strong knowledge of hand tools, carpentry, mechanics, or painting.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with the general public and other personnel.
Ability to obtain IMSA Signs and Marking certification within one year of hire.
Ability to obtain work zone certification within six months of hire.
Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
Must have or obtain a Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B within 180 days of employment.
Must successfully pass a background check related to the position before an offer of employment or promotion.
Must comply with alcohol and controlled-substance testing under DOT requirements and the City’s substance abuse policy.

Nice To Haves

Some experience in Thermo-Plastic pavement markings.
