About The Position

The Signal Supervisor's duties include the performing of advanced, quality railroad signal maintenance work in accordance with accepted professional practices, including the general code of operating rules, to ensure optimum performance of railroad signal systems and public and personal safety.

Requirements

Have excellent oral and written communication, planning and organizing skills.
Have good problem solving and decision-making skills.
Have knowledge of all railway safety rules.
Works as a member of a team.
Climb/balance; visual acuity/inspection, tracing; visual color discrimination; understanding visual symbols and displays.
GED or Higher.
5 years of NPR Signal Maintainer experience required.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Must have and maintain an insurable driving status which includes but is not limited to company driver provisions.
Must have or be able to obtain a valid DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Certificate (Med Card).
Pass a mandatory drug test to maintain a drug-free workplace.
Undergo a thorough physical examination to ensure the requirements of the position can be met.
Provide professional references to validate qualifications and character.
Complete a comprehensive background check to confirm suitability for the position.

Responsibilities

Keep records of Hours of Service (HOS) for all employees that perform signal work.
Schedule on-call calendar 24/7/365, to include nights, weekends, holidays, and PTO.
Supervise, coordinate, and communicate for all signal work by other employees.
Coordinate with Manager and Roadmaster all state, federal, contractor project planning.
Install, inspect, test, maintain, or repair grade crossing warning systems, signals, and signal equipment, such as interlocks.
Connect outgoing and incoming lines to signal equipment, ability to follow a diagram. Wire signal facilities. Splice cable.
Operate and align a switch.
Inspect, test, and maintain signals equipment. Inspect, test, maintain and repair signal circuitry and equipment using standard electrical and/or electronic testing equipment. Install, inspect, test, and maintain batteries.
Align, adjust, and calibrate signal equipment. Replace defective components, wiring, broken lenses, or light bulbs. Lubricate moving parts on mechanical equipment. Clean signal equipment.
Receive track, time, and direction information from dispatcher regarding train movements.
Advise other railroad personnel, and sometimes the general public, regarding track and signal conditions.
Read track profile giving layout of signal equipment and other information pertinent to signal work.
Direct the public and traffic in emergency situations.
Operate communications equipment such as radio. Maintain records of repairs, calibrations, and FRA tests.
Determine the need and make orders for supplies, materials, and other items. Receive materials.
Comply with safety rules, operating rules, timetables, and signal rules instructions.
Monitor situations at all times for fire, spill hazards, suspicious or unauthorized activity.
Alert others to unsafe conditions.
Verify that equipment, materials, tools, or systems meet drawings specifications or prints.
Recognize errors in testing or inspection specifications, schematics, or diagrams.
Troubleshoot, repair, or replace electrical equipment, mechanical or electro-mechanical equipment such as relays, timers, counter, meters, switches, control devices.
Provide flag protection when required.
May be called upon to perform duties as directed by Roadmaster.
Will perform work on Northern Plains Railroad as directed.
