Signal Processing Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Networked Systems and Integrated Fires group at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a Signal Processing Engineer to develop advanced sensing, tracking, and data fusion capabilities. The role involves algorithm development, modeling and simulation, and systems engineering to explore ways to process and combine information from multiple sources into accurate, timely, and actionable data for kinetic and non-kinetic weapons and effectors. The work supports critical technologies for future defense systems. The engineer will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop, prototype, and demonstrate algorithms and integrated system capabilities. The position requires eligibility to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by the start date and ultimately a Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for clearance eligibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience developing and implementing sensor data processing, sensor data association, or target tracking algorithms and concepts.
  • Strong foundation in statistical or adaptive signal processing.
  • Demonstrated analytical and applied mathematical skills.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, or similar programming languages for algorithm development or data analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas and results effectively.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by the start date and ultimately obtain a Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for eligibility to access classified information.

Nice To Haves

  • MS or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Research, development, or analysis experience in probability and stochastic processes.
  • Research, development, or analysis experience in target tracking algorithms and concepts.
  • Research, development, or analysis experience in sensor fusion algorithms and techniques.
  • Research, development, or analysis experience in detection and estimation theory.
  • Active Secret security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and evaluate algorithms for sensor data processing, target tracking, and multi-sensor information fusion.
  • Investigate approaches for integrating information from various sensors and other sources to support kinetic and non-kinetic engagements.
  • Develop and use modeling and simulation tools to assess algorithm performance and explore system concepts.
  • Analyze sensor and system characteristics and their impact on tracking, data fusion, and overall system performance.
  • Conduct technical studies to evaluate alternative algorithms, architectures, and system designs and identify performance improvements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop, prototype, and demonstrate algorithms and integrated system capabilities for future defense applications.

Benefits

  • Robust education assistance program.
  • Retirement contributions and retirement plans.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance.
  • Flexible spending accounts.
  • Training and development.
  • Potential sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance, subject to policy and eligibility.
