About The Position

The Illinois Tollway is dedicated to providing and promoting a safe and efficient system of highways while ensuring the highest possible level of service to our customers. The Tollway is a user-fee system – no state or federal tax dollars are used to support maintenance and operations. Operations are funded by toll and concession revenues. In support of this vision, the Sign Shop Manager is responsible for managing and directing the Sign Shop Unit coordinating sign installation, maintenance, manufacturer, pavement striping, and traffic counting activities. The Sign Shop Manger is also responsible for coordinating Capital Program Projects with all Contractors, Design Engineers, Construction Project Manager, cross-departmental units within the Tollway and cross agency contacts.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D., or the Equivalent of Education and Experience
  • A minimum of five years of work experience in sign maintenance activities including, fabrication of all types of signs used on an expressway - Interstate highway
  • Five years or more of managerial and/or supervisory work experience
  • Considerable knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices as it applies to Expressway - Interstate Operations
  • Possession a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements of air brakes, combination vehicles and tank trucks (at the time of the initial interview and at all times thereafter)

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Management or a related field
  • Exposure to the preparation of an annual Sign Shop budget and annual work plan
  • Understanding of all facets of traffic counting
  • Familiarity with the management or supervision of a sign manufacturing and system-wide sign maintenance program covering over 12,000 signs

Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct the Sign Shop Unit coordinating sign installation, maintenance, manufacturer, pavement striping, and traffic counting activities.
  • Coordinate Capital Program Projects with all Contractors, Design Engineers, Construction Project Manager, cross-departmental units within the Tollway and cross agency contacts.
  • Coordinate and support the Tollway’s General Consultant in their overhead structure inspections.
  • Complete day and night surveys of Tollway, including: mainline, crossroads, and ramp signing, as well as all roadway striping.
  • Enhance annual work program or forecast based on survey, knowledge of future work needs by others and anticipated maintenance needs.
  • Develop annual budget for materials, labor, and equipment to carry out programs.
  • Direct the fabrication of signs; the installation, repair and replacement of signs; the renewal of pavement marking and traffic counting.
  • Manage personnel, inventory and equipment to meet Authority traffic marking and signing needs in a safe and cost-effective manner.
  • Coordinate work efforts with Contractors, Project Managers and Engineers to ensure Capital Improvement Projects are complete on-time, within budget, and in compliance with all Federal Standards.
  • Maintain 24/7 on-call availability for signing emergencies and snow events.
  • Oversee different Maintenance Sections during snow events.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations of subordinate staff.
  • Determine and issue disciplinary action as appropriate.
  • Perform annual Certification Testing for advancement of subordinate staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
