About The Position

The Sign Shop is an in-house sign manufacturing unit which provides high quality traffic signs to all Department of Transportation field operations in compliance with both state and national standards, and to provide the public with safe and informative traveling routes. The work unit serves internal Maintenance Sections, Public Relation and Traffic units with new traffic signs. The unit processes raw material stock and retro-reflective material into highway traffic signs; orders, manufactures and prepares orders for pick-up. The sign shop is part of the small set of self-generating revenue cost centers in the Department in which the revenues should match expenditures on material, equipment and labor. The Sign Fabricator position follows established guidelines, processes and procedures to fabricate quality signs as requested by the various maintenance/ Engineering sections. This includes standard road signs as well as to fabricate signs for emergencies and special situations or projects. These positions will learn how to properly operate and maintain shop equipment and tools as well as train on how to layout and adhere sheeting/decals to fleet vehicles.

  • No previous education or experience is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in automotive, carpentry, HVAC, and repairing equipment is highly desirable.
  • Completion of non-correspondence vocational training in sheet metal work from an accredited vocational school also is desirable.
  • Demonstrated success with the duties as listed in the Description of the Job section

  • Familiarity with safely and effectively operating heavy punch presses, iron worker, 10 foot shear, digital printers and design software , drills, saws, and other hand tools

Responsibilities

  • Be able to understand established procedures and how to use Sign Shop machinery and tools to manufacture Class I, Class II, and Class III sign panel blanks
  • Become familiar with the books that contain codes and standards for various types of signs
  • Learn how to research signs using their code and how to read sign layouts provided in the standards or through engineering drawings
  • Maintain inventory levels
  • Learn how to calculate materials needed to complete an order
  • Demonstrate responsible time management practices
  • Route out unusual shaped signs including wood signs
  • Drill, countersink, and rivet panel blanks as required
  • Must determine appropriate machinery and/or tooling to manufacture sign blank required on work order; safely and expeditiously
  • Train on how to use Sign Shop machinery and tools to manufacture Class I, Class II, and Class III sign panel blanks
  • Drill, countersink, and rivet panel blanks as required
  • Route out unusual, shaped signs including wood signs
  • Drill, countersink, and rivet panel blanks as required
  • Learn how to apply pressure sensitive reflective sheeting to sign blanks to include guide signs using layouts and drawings, while utilizing appropriate equipment and/ or tools
  • Inspect quality of work for defects, misprints, and conformity to standards
  • Produce finished products created from these designs and layouts as specified
  • Load and unload customer’s vehicles, wrapping and palletizing orders
  • Communicate with customers to ensure their needs are being met
  • Drive forklift to load and unload orders and supplies
  • Deliver orders when necessary
  • Other duties as assigned
