About The Position

Arizona State University (ASU) is seeking an experienced fabrication shop specialist to support the 17,000 sq. ft. fabrication shop at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center. This shop is a university-wide resource for students, faculty, staff, and affiliates, equipped with a wood shop, metal shop, MIG and TIG welding, machine shop, sewing, 3D printing, laser cutting, and design workstations. The Shop Specialist will prioritize safety, customer service, and learning, assisting users with specialized equipment and contributing to a supportive project completion environment. Responsibilities include training users on equipment, assisting with equipment use, instructing classes, and mentoring users on project creation. A successful candidate will have expertise in fabrication areas, understand customer service principles, and possess a willingness to learn. Training will be provided for all fabrication areas, and all employees are expected to learn and service all equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Proficient knowledge in at least one traditional equipment subject area: Machining, Woodworking, Metalworking, Electronics, or Textiles.
  • Proficient knowledge in at least one digital fabrication subject area: Laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC routing, or CNC machining.
  • Experience with classroom or small group instruction.
  • At least one year of experience in customer service, hospitality, or retail environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as subject matter expert on specialty shop equipment and assists shop users in the safe and effective use of equipment
  • Supervises use of shop equipment to ensure safe and effective operation of equipment
  • Provides a high level of customer service to shop users
  • Mentors shop space users to assist with fabrication of their project
  • Prepares equipment, tools and supplies for user equipment reservations
  • Supports shop operations including equipment maintenance, infrastructure improvements, and routine cleaning
  • Instructs and demonstrates skill on a variety of equipment and software
  • Certifies individuals for use of the equipment, updates user permissions in the shop equipment scheduling system
  • Supports the development and implementation of policies and procedures in support of a safe operating environment which encourages rather than discourages use
  • Supports administration of shop management software including creating user credentials, scheduling workshops and communicating with users
  • Troubleshooting and repairing equipment
  • Other duties as assigned
