About The Position

The Shop Manager is responsible for the maintenance, repair, preventive service, and operational readiness of all golf course and grounds maintenance equipment utilized throughout the property. This position oversees the daily operations of the equipment maintenance shop and supervises Assistant Mechanics while working closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to ensure all equipment supports the Club's exceptional standards of golf course conditioning and presentation. The Shop Manager is responsible for maintaining a safe, efficient, and organized maintenance program that minimizes downtime, extends equipment life, and supports the operational needs of the Golf Course Maintenance Department.

Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate maintenance equipment and tools safely.
  • Ability to respond to urgent equipment repairs during weekends, tournaments, and special events.
  • Advanced knowledge of diesel, gasoline, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex equipment issues.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership and employee development skills.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and workplace safety practices.
  • Proficiency with maintenance tracking software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge and passion for golf, golf course operations, and the golf industry.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English is required.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Valid CA driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Relevant technical training and/or certification in equipment maintenance required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical school certification in diesel mechanics, small engine repair, automotive technology, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible equipment maintenance experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience maintaining golf course equipment is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Toro, John Deere, Jacobsen, Kubota, Club Car utility equipment, and related turf equipment preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to communicate in Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Technical school certification in diesel mechanics, small engine repair, automotive technology, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience maintaining golf course equipment is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Toro, John Deere, Jacobsen, Kubota, Club Car utility equipment, and related turf equipment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and rebuilding of golf course, and grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Maintain equipment including greens mowers, fairway mowers, rough mowers, utility vehicles, tractors, aerators, sprayers, topdressers, sweepers, blowers, chainsaws, pumps, generators, and related equipment.
  • Perform hydraulic, diesel, gasoline engine, electrical, welding, fabrication, and mechanical repairs.
  • Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules for all equipment.
  • Maintain equipment records, repair histories, warranty information, and maintenance logs.
  • Monitor equipment performance and proactively identify replacement or repair needs.
  • Coordinate warranty claims and vendor service work when necessary.
  • Ensure equipment is properly calibrated and operating according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate Assistant Mechanics and assigned shop personnel.
  • Establish maintenance priorities based on operational needs and direction from the Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Assist in developing technical skills and certifications for mechanics and maintenance staff.
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment and maintenance facilities.
  • Manage parts inventory and maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Research and source parts, supplies, and equipment at competitive pricing.
  • Assist with annual equipment replacement planning and capital budget recommendations.
  • Monitor maintenance expenditures and operate within approved budgets.
  • Evaluate equipment lifecycle costs and recommend repair versus replacement decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental, and Club safety standards.
  • Maintain proper storage and handling of fuels, oils, batteries, and hazardous materials.
  • Ensure all equipment meets operational safety requirements before being returned to service.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe equipment maintenance shop.
  • Conduct safety training related to equipment operation and maintenance.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent fall reasonably within the scope of the position and department.
