About The Position

ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Shop Assistant to join our team. The salary range for this position: $22.00 - 24.00 per hour. Job Summary The Shop Assistant’s responsibilities involve issuing tools and selling materials. It requires the fielding of questions from students on materials and procedures while guiding them on the safe use of shop hand tools. These tasks are often carried out simultaneously, so the ability to multitask is necessary. Incumbunt will be assigned to one primary shift but must be able to work any shift and at either campus location.

Requirements

  • Customer service and cashiering experience required
  • Some experience using basic wood and metal working tools
  • Proficient computer literacy
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary for customer service, including the patience and understanding required to work with students daily
  • Basic knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance requirements including hazardous chemicals and hazardous waste management
  • Self-starter with good multi-tasking skills; highly organized, able to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff with varying degrees of skills and backgrounds
  • Available to work weeknights and some weekends

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using large power tools
  • Prior experience in higher education
  • Operate forklift and pallet jacks

Responsibilities

  • Issuing in and out of tools and materials using web checkout
  • Retail sales including the use of a cash register and computer
  • Keeping track of inventory and reordering when needed
  • Restocking inventory items and ordering supplies as needed
  • Provide instruction to students in the proper utilization of hand tools, composites, stock materials and aerosols
  • Provide provisional support and guidance for any students who enter the shop
  • Provide constructive feedback, sourcing materials, and positive reinforcement to students
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment throughout the department
  • Comply and ensure that safety and dress codes are carried out in accordance with shop policies, including wearing assigned PPE
  • Attend required training sessions on assigned PPE and EHS provided by the College
  • Opt-in for First Responder training for injuries, blood, and bodily fluid clean-up, as well as Emergency Responder management to enhance your skills and qualify for a wage increase
  • Familiarize yourself with basic first aid procedures and be prepared to assist in case of minor injuries or accidents, if trained and opted in
  • Attend safety meetings and training sessions to stay updated on safety practices, emergency response procedures, and blood and bodily fluid clean-up, if opted in
  • Report any accidents or safety concerns to the supervisor and actively participate in incident documentation
  • Help with the unloading and stocking of stock and raw materials in the Model Shop and from the loading dock
  • Other related duties, as may be assigned
