ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Shop Assistant to join our team. Requirements

• Customer service and cashiering experience required.
• Some experience using basic wood and metal working tools.
• Proficient computer literacy.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary for customer service, including the patience and understanding required to work with students daily.
• Basic knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance requirements including hazardous chemicals and hazardous waste management.
• Self-starter with good multi-tasking skills; highly organized, able to work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff with varying degrees of skills and backgrounds.
• Available to work weeknights and some weekends.

• Operate forklift and pallet jacks.

Responsibilities

• Issuing tools and selling materials.
• Fielding questions from students on materials and procedures while guiding them on the safe use of shop hand tools.
• Issuing in and out of tools and materials using web checkout.
• Retail sales including the use of a cash register and computer.
• Keeping track of inventory and reordering when needed.
• Restocking inventory items and ordering supplies as needed.
• Provide instruction to students in the proper utilization of hand tools, composites, stock materials and aerosols.
• Provide provisional support and guidance for any students who enter the shop.
• Provide constructive feedback, sourcing materials, and positive reinforcement to students.
• Maintain a safe and clean work environment throughout the department.
• Comply and ensure that safety and dress codes are carried out in accordance with shop policies, including wearing assigned PPE.
• Attend required training sessions on assigned PPE and EHS provided by the College.
• Familiarize yourself with basic first aid procedures and be prepared to assist in case of minor injuries or accidents, if trained and opted in.
• Attend safety meetings and training sessions to stay updated on safety practices, emergency response procedures, and blood and bodily fluid clean-up, if opted in.
• Report any accidents or safety concerns to the supervisor and actively participate in incident documentation.
• Help with the unloading and stocking of stock and raw materials in the Model Shop and from the loading dock.
• Other related duties, as may be assigned.
