About The Position

The Shipping Manager is responsible for safely monitoring both inbound and outbound loads and ensuring all paperwork is done accurately and timely. This person will also be responsible for the coordination and tracking of outbound trucks that are waiting to be loaded. The manager will confer with the customer service and production departments on all product increases and decreases for outgoing loads. The shipping manager reports to the Customer Service Manager at the manufacturing facility.

Requirements

  • Preferred candidates will have at least two years post-secondary education in distribution, transportation, logistics or over 2 years of related field or relevant work experience
  • Ability to become a forklift certified instructor or train-the-trainer
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a non-U.S. citizen having legal status to reside and work in the U.S. for reason other than practical training
  • Proven leadership, persuasive, initiative, adaptability, and communication skills are necessary for success in this position.
  • Proficient with basic office computer programs, e.g., word processing, email, and spreadsheets

Responsibilities

  • Upon arrival, all inbound drivers will report to the shipping manager to receive direction and receive a safety briefing. All carrier passengers are to remain in cab of vehicle. Safety vest to be worn by driver
  • Work with trucking companies to ensure the proper equipment/trailer will be send to load: flatbed, step deck, proper straps, correct number of straps, towable, etc.…
  • Prioritize the loading of trucks as per customer service department
  • Coordinate deliveries, location, times, road conditions.
  • Coordinate shipments with end users. At times loads could be delivering from multiple WL Plastics locations. The Shipping Manager will need to coordinate how many loads each plant will deliver on a certain day to ensure the customer receives the correct amount of trucks per request. Travel time for each load will need to be considered when booking trucks.
  • Evaluate weather conditions to load safely and keep shipments flowing.
  • Verify shipping paperwork of product loaded with manufactures print line for correct sizing, dimensional ratio (DR), stripe color designation (if applicable), correct dunnage, and correct strapping. This step is important because, the Shipping Manager will be the last WL Plastics employee to see the product before it arrives to the customer.
  • Ensure inbound truck and trailer is safely parked on level ground with parking brake set or in adverse weather conditions wheels are chocked
  • Complete Parts I and II of the cargo securement inspection checklist to include required signatures
  • Verify the securement of product loads; take digital photograph of side and rear-view picture of trailer load before releasing driver
  • Review, scan and file shipping manifest, cargo securement inspection checklist, and digital images of each outbound load into the computer for record and documentation
  • Provide forklift training, coaching, and discipline for interdepartmental personnel
  • Manage 3-7 employees
  • Negotiate over $1 million dollars in freight per year.
  • Negotiate and accurately report the negotiated freight rate for each truck to unsure the freight invoice is paid correctly.
  • Ensure customer service expectations are met
  • Coordinates activities with other departments
  • Communicate with Quality Assurance department to ensure effective participation in the Quality Policy and ISO 9001 procedural requirements
  • Communicates directly with maintenance department to facilitate maintenance and repair of equipment in the receiving and shipping areas
  • Participate in safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures
  • Ensures city, county, state, and federal regulations relating to the shipping department are always maintained
  • Inventory and load product specified by shipping orders; label, sort, and band product as required per company loading guidelines
  • Performing other duties assigned by the plant manager
  • Flexible hours and weekend work will be required
  • Accountable for understanding and putting into practice the SHE Principles. Additionally, the Shipping Manager has a responsibility to cascade the understanding of the principles through the location and their work group.
