About The Position

In close collaboration with the store teams, you’ll be responsible for the efficient, cost-effective operation of all shipping and receiving functions for the University of Toronto Bookstores. This includes supervision of unionized employees, planning and budgeting responsibilities, department related purchasing, carrier and custom broker negotiations and collaboration, other customs/traffic related duties, managing some warehousing space, and fostering strong teamwork.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary graduate; or equivalent education/experience
  • Four years shipping and receiving experience including management
  • Move/lift/handle cartons/product weighing up to 20 kg
  • Excellent knowledge of freight rates and customs/tariff regulations and procedures
  • Proficient with computers including MS office and other related resources

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in warehouse environment is an asset
  • NetSuite experience is considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Organizes day to day operational responsibilities for the Koffler shipping and receiving team
  • Recruits, trains, supervises and supports staff; conducts discipline and coaching
  • Plans staffing and schedules staffing accordance with budgetary goals
  • Coordinates the shipping and receiving requirements, of various departments and locations to optimizes the timely flow of goods
  • Recommends and develops policies and procedures related to shipping and receiving, including traffic and customs
  • Provides routing and carrier instructions to all staff and suppliers
  • Negotiates freight rates with outside carriers in consultation with management optimize both costs and service
  • Collaborates with the text team to ensure wholesale buy backs and rental returns are sent to wholesale vendors in timely manner using carriers preferred by wholesale vendors
  • Coordinates returns with satellite locations to take advantage of cost savings through consolidation
  • Ensures that departmental equipment is properly serviced and in good order
  • Manages and maintains the inventory levels of receiving supplies without undue surplus and shortages
  • Acts as liaison between shipping and ecommerce team to ensure customer orders are handled efficiently
  • Interacts with the accounting department to ensure all paperwork, and issues, are checked and resolved in a timely manner
  • Ensures all invoices and charges relating to Customs and Border traffic are reviewed, approved, investigating any errors or discrepancies. Pursues any duty drawbacks that are applicable
  • Collaborates with Distribution Division and trans-border carriers manages the shipments between Tonawanda, New York warehouse and Toronto
  • Provides a resource for all pertinent customs regulations, tariff information, etc., and keeps management updated, and in line with any changes
  • Participates in the opening and closing management rotation including weekend shifts
  • Other duties as assigned
