About The Position

General Dynamics NASSCO, a member of the General Dynamics Marine Systems business unit, is seeking Shipfitters J-4 for their Steel Shop in Norfolk, Virginia. NASSCO is involved in ship construction, repair, conversion, and maintenance for commercial and national defense assets. This role requires the ability to access Navy installations and shipyards by obtaining necessary badges. The position is for the first shift, 6 AM to 2:45 PM, with a 45-minute lunch break.

Requirements

• Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards by obtaining DBIDS and NAVSEA badges.
• Knowledgeable in layout of plates, pipes and structural shapes, including flat layouts and complex layouts involving projection and compound angles.
• Knowledgeable of ship related nomenclature and be able to locate structures in relationship to frames, longitudinal stringers, centerlines, etc.
• Know weld symbols and how they apply to material preparation for welding.
• Skills should include tack welding, burning, use of various power tools such as shears, saws, presses, etc.
• Must be capable of making templates as needed for fabrications and/or installation of ship structures.
• Must be capable of assembling foundations, deck houses, and specialized structures for all areas of the ship.
• Must know the guide lines of 5 S and be aware of the standard items.

Responsibilities

• Plan and complete work with little supervision using blueprints.
• Perform layout of plates, pipes, and structural shapes, including flat and complex layouts involving projection and compound angles.
• Identify ship-related nomenclature and locate structures in relation to frames, longitudinal stringers, centerlines, etc.
• Understand weld symbols and their application to material preparation for welding.
• Perform tack welding, burning, and use of various power tools such as shears, saws, and presses.
• Make templates as needed for fabrication and/or installation of ship structures.
• Assemble foundations, deck houses, and specialized structures for all areas of the ship.
• Adhere to 5S guidelines and be aware of standard items.
