About The Position

First-Class Shipfitter, also referred to as a Journeyman Shipfitter or Boilermaker, is responsible for using various tools and equipment to fabricate, assemble, and erect metal components during the construction of marine vessels. Shipfitter work may involve working at heights, in confined spaces, in various weather conditions, and across multiple shifts in a 24-hour production environment. As with most shipyard positions, Shipfitters may be required to work either day or night shift depending on production needs and the number of ships under construction.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of trade experience
  • Basic math, reading, and comprehension skills
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints using both metric and standard measurements
  • Knowledge of layout, fit-up, and fabrication of steel plate and beam
  • Experience using trade-specific tools such as grinders, hand torches, hydraulic and ratchet jacks, chain falls and/or come-a-longs, combination squares, framing squares, hand levels, and plumb bobs

Nice To Haves

  • 6+ years of marine, shipbuilding, or construction experience
  • Knowledge of setting and erecting units with proficiency in the use of datum lines
  • Familiarity with fit-up, alignment tolerances, and advanced blueprint reading skills
