About The Position

Sunoco LP, following its acquisition of Parkland Corporation, is a prominent energy infrastructure and fuel distribution company operating globally. The company is seeking a Shift Supervisor for its Burnaby Refinery's operating division. This role is crucial for overseeing and coordinating all refinery operations during an assigned shift, ensuring safety, efficiency, and continuous operation. The Shift Supervisor will manage a team of operators, handle operational issues and emergencies, and maintain compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Refinery Operations.

Requirements

  • Valid 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate or a Bachelor’s Degree in chemical engineering or mechanical engineering.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in refinery operations or a similar industrial setting.
  • Proven experience in a supervisory or management role, preferably in a refinery or chemical processing environment.
  • Experience working within the framework of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Strong decision-making abilities, particularly under pressure or in emergency situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for clear reporting and coordination with different departments.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee all refinery operations during the assigned shift, ensuring continuous, efficient, and safe plant performance.
  • Enforce strict adherence to all safety protocols, procedures, and regulatory requirements, identifying and addressing potential safety hazards. Perform routine assessments on field work to identify successes and opportunities for improvement.
  • Lead by example; foster a culture of teamwork, accountability and continuous improvement; guide and mentor the operations team; provide clear instruction and feedback.
  • Lead the response to any operational issues or emergencies, coordinating with relevant teams to resolve incidents quickly and safely.
  • Maintain effective communication with other departments, including Area 1 Operations, maintenance, engineering, and senior management, to ensure smooth operations.
  • Regularly monitor plant performance, identify inefficiencies or issues, and provide detailed shift reports and updates to management.
  • Ensure all operations comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations, and maintain accurate records for audits and inspections.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance refinery performance and safety.
  • Collaborate with the Training Manager to develop crew training plans that align with the overall Operations training strategy.
  • Conduct thorough shift handovers, ensuring that the incoming supervisor is fully briefed on ongoing operations, issues, and priorities.
  • Implements the weekly operating plan for plant throughput, yield, and product quality specifications.
  • Manages adherence to the collective agreement, addresses grievances, oversees progressive discipline, develops labor schedules, and approves payroll entries.
