About The Position

Provides direct supervision of residents and Juvenile Supervision Officers in the Robert N. Barnes Regional Juvenile Facility during all program operations. Oversees the daily schedules and activities of the program. Monitors residents during academic classes, therapeutic classes, and other scheduled activities and provides leadership and counseling. Guidelines include but are not limited to State and Federal laws, Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) standards and procedures, and Nueces County Juvenile Probation Department policies and procedures. Exclusion: A person employed as a peace officer is not eligible for employment with the Robert N. Barnes Regional Juvenile Facility, nor is a person who is currently on probation or parole, or who is serving a sentence for criminal offense. Applicants must: 1) pass a drug screening 2) pass a psychological examination 3) pass a physical examination 4) pass a background check 5) pass a Diana Screen.

Requirements

• Must be 21 years of age.
• High school diploma or general equivalency diploma.
• Two years of experience in one of these fields: corrections or law enforcement, employment in a residential setting, military experience including reserves, teaching, internships or work with youth in a paid or volunteer capacity.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Certification as a Juvenile Supervision Officer within six months of employment.
• Must complete approved restraint training within 30 days of employment.
• Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
• Must obtain defensive driving certificate within 6 months of employment along with CPR and First Aid Certification.
• Any person who is currently on probation or parole, or who is serving a sentence for a criminal offense is not eligible for employment with Robert N. Barnes Regional Juvenile Facility.
• An individual holding any peace officer certifications cannot hold them while employed with Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center (NCJJC).

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree in one of these areas: psychology, sociology, education, criminal justice or another field approved by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for maintaining appropriate staff to resident coverage while on duty.
• Assists in introducing new employees to the institution’s vision and mission statement.
• Identifies staff development and training needs, informs Assistant Post Adjudication Supervisor, and provides staff training.
• Promotes and supports safety awareness, enforces safety procedures, rules and regulations, submits work orders.
• Responds to crisis situations and provides crisis control.
• Supports, leads, coaches and evaluates performance of Juvenile Supervision Officers, and administers performance improvement plans as appropriate.
• Insures that all documentation on residents is current and grammatically correct and contains all pertinent information.
• Assists Juvenile Supervision Officers regarding schedules and activities and serves as Juvenile Supervision Officer as needed.
• Reviews staff requests for leave; locates relief staff to provide coverage, as needed.
• Oversees a variety of tasks, such as security checks, mail distribution, laundry, medication dispense, fire and evacuation procedures, cleanliness of grounds, writing of incident and medical reports, etc.
• Ensures all policies and procedures for safety and program are met.
• Supervises and maintains group control and safety during all activities of residents.
• Participates in orientation of new residents and processes them according to department rules and regulations.
• Remain alert and aware of group dynamics and confronts crisis situations in a calm and professional manner, demonstrating skills in crisis counseling.
• Assists residents in developing a healthy and positive attitude about themselves through individual counseling, group counseling, discussion, and Life Skill classes.
• Reports to Shift Supervisor of next shift any unusual occurrences during shift.
• Organizes and implements activities for residents as scheduled and creates a productive activity when scheduled activities are cancelled.
• Reports unusual and inappropriate behaviors of residents to on-coming Shift Supervisors, Assistant Post Adjudication Supervisor, and Case Manager, taking appropriate measures and/or implementing corrective action and document resident’s behavior.
• Participates in disciplinary hearings of residents as needed.
• Conducts regular visual checks on residents.
• Assists teacher and volunteer service providers by supervising residents.
• Performs frisk and strip searches on residents and conducts room searches to control contraband.
• Takes appropriate action in the event of facility defacing and/or maintenance needs.
• Documents all occurrences immediately.
• Logs in all persons entering or leaving the facility and oversees people who come for visitation.
• Receives, screens and logs all incoming and outgoing telephone calls.
• In the absence of the receptionist, transfers incoming calls and takes messages as needed.
• Coordinates mail and visitation privileges of residents.
• Provides Case Managers with appropriate information regarding residents’ behavior and circumstances.
• Ensures that the facility is maintained in a neat and clean manner by organizing residents in regular clean-up activities.
• Performs housekeeping duties as needed.
• Serves meals and snacks, following acceptable food handling practices.
• Testifies in court as needed.
• Conducts and documents unannounced rounds during shift.
• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the facility.
• Is on call as scheduled by the Assistant Post Adjudication Supervisor.
