About The Position

The Shift Mechanic is responsible for maintaining all equipment, machinery, and the building in good working order and making necessary repairs. This role requires working a shift work schedule, including every other Sunday, and coordinating job assignments with the Shift Supervisor to ensure maximum production uptime and efficiency. The mechanic will also assist with facility evaluations, oversee PM Operator functions, and perform preventive maintenance and repairs. A key aspect of the role involves managing the maintenance parts inventory and ensuring all documentation is accurate. The position requires a full understanding of the extrusion and thermoforming process and machinery to ensure quality production uptime, including diagnosing and repairing problems with minimal supervision. Additionally, the mechanic will perform facility shutdown and startup procedures, building repairs (plumbing, roofing, HVAC, etc.), and adhere to safety protocols like Hot Work Permits. Operating PIT equipment, performing housekeeping, and communicating shift issues to oncoming personnel are also essential duties. The role may involve unloading incoming product, assisting with audits, working overtime, and attending mandated training.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • 3 years experience of manufacturing maintenance experience to include: welding, trouble-shooting of pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical controls, and maintenance/repair of plant machinery.
  • Ability to understand, read, write and speak English.
  • Ability to operate a calculator.
  • Ability to read and understand instrumentation gauges and schematics.
  • Ability to understand and determine "differentiation pressures" from a pressure controller.
  • Able to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.
  • Ability to recognize and identify problems with machines and/or material via collection of data and interpretation of that data.
  • Ability to apply common sense "understanding" to carry out written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to apply troubleshooting techniques to issues as they arise and seek help when necessary.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to differentiate between "good" and "bad" quality.
  • Powered Industrial Truck Certification (forklift, clamp, sissor lift, etc.).
  • Lockout/Tagout Certification.
  • On-site Hazmat Certification.
  • Hot Work Permit Certification.
  • Must be able to work the "Shift Work schedule" which includes every other Sunday.
  • Provide and maintain appropriate tools and toolbox to perform all necessary job functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent understanding of pneumatics, electrical controls and hydraulics with ability to diagnose and correct problems.
  • Application of strong mechanical and electrical knowledge including such as abilities in reading of schematics, etc.
  • Full understanding of extrusion and thermoforming process and machinery to ensure quality production uptime.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain all equipment/machinery and building in good working order and repair as necessary.
  • Coordinate all job assignments with Shift Supervisor at start of shift to ensure maximum production uptime and efficiency.
  • Assist Shift Supervisor with proper facility evaluation procedures including machinery shutdown.
  • Oversee and coordinate PM Operator functions for the respective shift.
  • Perform assigned Preventive Maintenance/ Safety Programs per defined schedule with accurate and complete documentation.
  • Complete all assigned Work Orders in a timely manner.
  • Maintain Maintenance Parts Inventory per Infor and Plant Sanitation standards.
  • Breakdown and setup all Extrusion and Thermoforming product on machinery to standards.
  • Diagnose and repair problems with extrusion and thermoforming machinery with little to no supervision to ensure maximum production run time.
  • Adjust daily schedule (break times, meal periods, etc.) to ensure machinery is in full production to maximize production uptime.
  • Perform all facility shutdown and startup procedures correctly and completely.
  • Perform necessary repairs to building including plumbing, roof, silos, trenches, heating and air systems, dock doors and plates, chiller system, parking lot, building additions/renovations, equipment modifications, and new equipment installations.
  • Follow Hot Work Permit procedures and ensure proper documentation is completed and signed off by Maintenance Manager/Shift Supervisor.
  • Operate all PIT equipment per OSHA specifications, including daily inspections, changing of batteries/propane tank, etc.
  • Perform all housekeeping functions necessary to business operations in respective work areas at all times.
  • Communicate all equipment and material issues arising from the operation of the shift with on-coming Maintenance personnel and/or Shift Supervisors/Maintenance Manager at each shift change.
  • Unload "incoming" product/material for receipt and placement into facility as business demands.
  • Assist in building/machinery preparation of all Plant Sanitation/OSHA audits.
  • Work overtime as business demands, including monthly training classes as mandated by OSHA and Plant Sanitations Certifications.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including all safety regulations.
  • Perform any and all job assignments/functions (including special projects) as necessary to daily business demands as instructed by Management.
