About The Position

Under the direction of the Plant Manager, the Shift Lead directs and assists in the work activities of production employees. This role oversees production floor activities to achieve safe, efficient operation of quality product, monitors and maintains production levels, and makes quality control decisions. The Shift Lead is responsible for ensuring safety policies and procedures are followed, distributing safety award points, and performing accident investigations. They will coach and develop employees through feedback, performance reviews, and corrective actions, while also communicating and enforcing company rules and policies. Additionally, this role involves approving timecards and time-off requests, conducting employee training on equipment operations and safety procedures, backing up plant personnel for machine operation, forklift, and crane use, and ensuring efficient changeover to the next shift lead. The Shift Lead will also complete production documentation and ensure maintenance of plant equipment through communication with the maintenance department.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, and quality standards
  • Knowledge of machines including their limitations
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with safety rules and requirements
  • Ability to accurately use tape measures, Rockwell tester, micrometers and calipers
  • Ability to read and understand material tags and production instructions
  • Ability to correctly retrieve and input data in a computer
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Time management skills
  • Forklift and/or crane certification is required

Nice To Haves

  • A high school diploma or GED with at least 1 year of Steel Technologies machine operator experience is preferred.
  • Formal education may be substituted with experience and training when competency in the position is demonstrated

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that maintenance of plant equipment, both troubleshooting and preventive maintenance, is completed through proper communication with maintenance
