About The Position

This position is for a Shift Lead in Catering, accepting both work-study and regular pay applicants. The Shift Lead will assist in the smooth operation of Catering by supporting staff training, ensuring adequate staffing levels, overseeing event setup, and attending to food and beverages to provide exceptional service at catered events. Shifts are varied and can include daytime, nights, and weekends.

Requirements

  • Ability to learn and perform duties with speed and efficiency following proper food safety and sanitation guidelines when preparing and serving.

  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills and a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work as a team in a fast-paced environment under short time constraints and within established deadlines.
  • Ability to lift pans weighing up to 40# between production area and carts.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist and lift weighing up to 60# when storing, stocking, and gathering prepared products and/or inventory items.
  • Ability to stand and walk on hard floors for extended hours.
  • Must be at least a part-time student (enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate or 5 graduate credits).
  • Must be in good academic standing (cumulative and semester GPAs of 2.0 or higher).
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Must pass all UWSP mandatory trainings along with department specific (food handling) trainings as part of their employment onboarding.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the on-going training of staff members.
  • Ensure staffing levels and event set-up.
  • Attend to food/beverages to provide exceptional service at catered events.
  • Assist with the set-up and manage pre-function work related to the area of responsibility.
  • Ensure all equipment is accounted for and in good working condition.
  • Assist with event staff training on how to plate food items for served meals or buffets.
  • Know the menu for each function and be aware of dietary concerns.
  • Promote and maintain the highest level of customer service to all guests.
  • Resolve guest complaints.
  • Assist with breaking down after events and returning all event items to proper locations.
  • Assist managers with unit operations in the absence of full-time staff.
  • Communicate frequently with all event staff for updates, suggestions, and concerns.
  • Use safety equipment, supplies, and procedures to perform job duties.
  • Maintain equipment in an orderly and sanitary manner in conformance with local, state, federal rules, and regulations.
  • Ensure that both service and leftover food are stored in a safe and sanitary condition.
  • Ensure dirty pans and utensils are sent for cleaning at the end of shifts.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings.
  • Complete University Dining Orientation Canvas course and all Mandatory Trainings before the first shift.
  • Abide by the policies outlined in the University Dining Student Employment Handbook.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Management Team.
