About The Position

The County of San Diego is seeking a Sheriff's Detentions Nurse to serve the citizens of San Diego. This is an entry-level professional registered nurse position within the Sheriff's Office, responsible for independently performing the full scope of medical and mental health nursing functions. Incumbents must operate under established procedures, protocols, and the legal scope of practice. This role provides routine and emergency nursing services to incarcerated individuals in detention facilities operated by the Sheriff's Office. The starting salary is based on qualifications, with future increases planned for June 2026 and June 2027. Additional premiums are available for evening and graveyard shifts, as well as an institutional work location premium. Successful candidates will undergo a thorough pre-employment medical exam and background check as part of the public safety screening process. This position qualifies for the Employee Referral Reward Program.

Requirements

  • A valid California Registered Nurse License is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • A current CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) card is required by the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness.
  • Felony convictions will be disqualifying.
  • Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency.
  • Candidates WILL be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological, polygraph or other examination or test prior to appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Nursing experience in correctional, psychiatric, geriatric, critical care, and emergency setting.
  • Correctional Health Care Professional (CCHP) certification is highly desirable.
