About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the department manager or other senior staff member, this staff member returns library materials to their original location on the shelves after check-in, keeps library materials in proper order, assists with shifting of materials as needed, ensures shelves and library materials stay clean, and other related tasks as needed. This position requires availability to work two evenings per week and two Saturdays per month.

Requirements

  • Some high school education
  • Ability to obtain a work permit in the state of Indiana if under age 18
  • Familiarity with libraries
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check
  • Excellent time management and self-management skills to stay on-task even when working independently
  • Works well with others to complete tasks when needed and takes direction from manager and senior staff members
  • Communicates clearly in verbal and written English with coworkers and patrons
  • Demonstrates resilience by responding calmly to changes or challenges
  • Maintains a professional and clean appearance, represents the library well to the public
  • Basic computer literacy; ability to learn how to navigate the library catalog and our timecard system

  • Customer Service: Welcomes library patrons, finds help for patrons when needed, is respectful and courteous towards both patrons and coworkers

Responsibilities

  • Push and pull carts of books and other library materials to take them to their proper location on the shelves
  • Accurately organize library materials in alphabetical order or Dewey Decimal system order
  • Organize shelves and library materials as needed, ensure that books and other materials are in the correct order, arranged neatly with labels faced in the correct direction, and kept free of dust and other debris
  • Share general knowledge about the library and the department in which you work with patrons when asked, or refer them to a staff member who can help them
  • Assist with tidying and cleaning department and staff workspaces throughout shift
  • Other tasks as needed, such as helping prepare craft items, assisting at the circulation desk for short periods, checking in and checking out items for patrons, and inspecting items for damage and reporting any damage to the appropriate department
